Period Like Cramps

Ok, during my first pregnancy, I never felt any Braxton Hicks contractions. So I don't know what they feel like. Apparently, several days before I went into labor, I was having contractions but didn't feel them, because they hooked me up to that belly strap and it said I was having them. Anyway, I am only 31 weeks now, and today I have been feeling like I have period like cramps, mostly in my lower back. There isn't any tightening or hardening in my tummy. Do these sound like BH or real contractions, or something else? How do you know what BH feel like? When I went into labor #1, at first I felt like I had period cramps, then it intensified to the intestinal spasm cramps I get when I have to poop, until it was the gut wrentching, full blown, painful contractions. Please tell me I'm not going to be going into preterm labor. It's way too soon. He won't weigh enough!

I'm almost 32 weeks and I've been having these for a few weeks. I was a bit concerned so I asked my dr last week and he said yes, these are braxton hicks. I thought they would feel more like contractions which I have been feeling also, but he said they can be both ways. I wouldn't worry about it yet. I think when you feel the real contractions and real labor, you will know. this is my first, and I was worreid about preterm labor but the dr said not to worry.

So it is still BHs even though there is not tightening or hardening of my tummy? Thanks btw.

That's what the dr said. I also feel the contraction like feelings with the braxton hicks, but he said they can be both ways. I feel the period like cramps in my lower back and hips and sometimes it's hard to walk and he said that is also braxton hicks. I guess they don't have to feel like contractions, they can have different feelings, which I didn't know of until I asked him.

Glad to know i am not alone, I have been having similar feelings to what you are describing here, both the obvious BH contractions - with the tightening, ect, AND the crampy feeling without the tightening part.

The most important thing you can do to see if these are BH is to drink lots of water, lie down for awhile and see if they go away. If you're having them on a fairly regular basis, especially 4 or more per hour, you need to verify this. If they're BH, they should stop by hydrating yourself and lying down, or you could try walking if you have the energy. Real contractions won't stop no matter what you do, they'll just get worse and closer together. Not to scare anyone, but I did have a preemie at 32 weeks (he's currenly my 5-year-old son), and my labor started out with just the period like pains and no uterine tightening. I'd had BH contractions throughout the pregnancy that were only uterine tightening, so when the period like pains started without the tightening, I didn't think there was any way they were real contractions. My doctor "forgot" to remind me about the techniques to see if they go away, and he told me just to come to the hospital if they got so-and-so minutes apart. By the time they finally did, there was nothing they could do to stop the labor, and I had him a few hours later.
