This is my first so I don't know what to expect. Today is my due date, well yesterday,I just haven't slept yet. I have been getting some tighning contractions no real pain. Than all the sudden I got this period like pulling cramp in the left side of my lower belly. Thing is though is that it's consistant. I been having it for about 20 mins now. I don't know how labour is I thought you get the painful contractions and time them and than they go away and you are pain free untill the next one. Do you get this crampy feeling the whole time too? I dunno should I call my midwife or ttry to sleep it off?

I don't know the answer to your question but I got the same thing last night while in bed. It was extremely painful and to one side (it woke me up), but it definitely wasn't a contraction. It was the same side as I was lying on so I thought maybe gravity caused the baby's head to apply pressure against some nerve or something...

According to my Bradley book, contractions during the first stage of labor are "generally 10 minutes apart or less, lasting 45-60 seconds and becoming progressively stronger and closer together. Generally do not space out from changing activity." It also says that they "peak at about 30 seconds. Possible pressure or cramping feeling." Also, in reference to your cramps - I've gotten those several times, but my doula says it is probably just ligaments being pulled as your uterus continues to expand. Hope this helps! Good luck!
