Prenatal Classes Question

To any mommies out there that have already had a baby- Are the prenatal classes absolutely necessary? There is only 1 class left in my area and it's on May 12th. I'm due May 17th. I'm not sure if I'm going to make it until then and I may miss the class. I'm just wondering if I did enough reading on labor & delivery, if that will be enough?

I am not taking cla__ses on labor & delivery and this will be my first.

I never did cla__ses with my first and I don't think my labour was any harder than that of my friends who did cla__ses, nor were they any more prepared than me when it came to going home with a newborn. I guess it depends on you if you think you'll be more rea__sured with the cla__s do it if not don't!

MissChrissie, I think it depends on the teacher and unfortunately you can't find that out till you're enrolled. We have a great teacher and I am learning some stuff that I didn't get from the What to expect book and stuff. Still...I think most is instinctual and you will do great regardless. I would say if you plan to go natural childbirth then it can be great for you and especially your hubby who will serve as your coach, but if not....I wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks for all the answers ! Hopefully I'll carry full term and be able to attend the cla__s....

misschrissie this is my second child , but with my first i didnt take any cla__ses on childrearing or labor and delivery. I didnt have any problems. I dont plan on taking cla__ses this time either.

While I haven't had my baby yet (almost 37 weeks so I'm getting there -yeah), my instructor was excellent. She was/is a doula (labor coach) and really had some good suggestions for pain management and things my dh could do to help me out during labor. I think that the cla__s will be beneficial, especially for my dh who didn't have any idea on what exactly birth would be like. I'm glad we took the cla__s.

we took a cla__s when I was preggo w/ my son and for us, it was pointless. I did enough reading on my own that the cla__s didn't go over anything I didn't already know. Plus when the time comes, you have your own way of coping with pain and breathing....if anything, I think it gets the men better prepared, but even that, I told my husband what I wanted him to do or not to do.....so we didn't even bother taking a refresher course this time around.

There is a cla__s that we have to take in order to deliver at the hospital, but it about c-section and v____al delivery. I am taking a cla__s on b___st feeding cla__s because I want to give it my best attempt, but the birthing cla__s you have to pay for and I heard it was not worth the money

how can they make you take a cla__s? That should be a personal choice...they don't make you pay for it do they? If they do, you should see if your insurance will cover it since how it is the hospitals "requirement"....also, I don't think they can make you....What if you go into pre-term labor and haven't had a chance to take it yet? They can't turn you away.

I took the cla__s, and didnt find it very helpful during labour, but it was fun.

No, you do not have to pay for it. I am taking my cla__s in April and I am due in June. They are a Catholic hospital and have done that for years. My mom had to take one 20 yrs ago when she had muy little brother, I am sure they do not t

Sorry hit submit before I was finished.

You probably get more valuable info just from talking to other pregnant ladies on this site than you do with the cla__ses. I don't remember a thing from mine. Of course, it was almost 4 years ago....

I think it is just a personal choice, if you feel that taking a cla__s would make you and your partner more comfortable by all means do so, but no it is not a must, and you can even buy or rent videos too.
