Stripping Sweeping Membranes

I went to the doctors yesterday. She told me that next week (because I'll be 38 weeks) that she will start to strip the membranes. I've heard of this and read up on this, but it sure doesn't make me feel any better. Anyone have this done? What EXACTLY do they do and does it hurt during it or afterwards? Just curious...I'm a little nervous....

I actually had this done at my appt on Wed morning. All they do is when they are doing your internal exam the dr kind of pushes in a little deeper and moves their hand around the babys head and your cervix. I have heard some people say it hurts but I didnt really think it did, just a lot of pressure. After I had it done almost immediately when I sat back up I started cramping. I basically cramped all day Wed and a little on Thurs (nothing too painful) and then Thurs night I started to lose my mucus plug. My dr says it wont necessarily put you in to labor but it could help speed up the process a little. I was almost 2 cm dialated on Wed so hopefully all this has been speeding everything up since I am due next friday. So dont be nervous its not that bad. Good Luck!

Im 39 weeks why hasn't my doctor done that to me yet?

Karen - Some doctors prefer to let nature take its course until they consider you overdue. You don't actually need your membranes swept to go into labor - your body will do it when baby is ready!

My doctor told me that it helps labor along. Makes it easier when you are 40 weeks....especially if they have to induce you. She said that is no fun especially if you haven't been stripped a little.

So I think my doctor did that to me and how long are you suppose to bleed after that?

Karen I had mine done Wed and I spotted a little Wed, some more thursday night plus I started to lose my mucus plug and today I am still spotting a little. I am not spotting a ton and my dr says that it is fine if you spot a little for awhile. Though I think most of my spotting is due to still losing pieces of my plug. Sorry TMI.

I had my membranes swept twice I did not find that it hurt but just really uncomfortable the second time I had it done I went into labor the next day.

I just hit 39 weeks and the doctor stripped my membranes today. He said they were a lot tougher than normal. Very strong membranes. lol... I guess if you are pretty healthy and keep have good nutrients your membranes and amnio. sac will probably be much thicker and stronger. ANYHOW.... it didn't hurt at all like some women say. Yes there was some pressure, especially since he had to go back and forth pretty hard because of how tough it was, yet nothing that I would cry over. Just made a slight face saying "ouch" and that was it. Anyhow, I was 4 cm dilated today, fully effaced and baby engaged. I was 3 cm dilated for the last 3 weeks. So, to hear 4 cm was a relief to know somethings going on down there. My question is.... is this going to work?? Doctor said he thinks I'll go into labor within 24-48 hours. Yet, I hear so many say they have to get this done more than once. My next apt. is in one week from today. Am I going to make it?? Oh, also..... I lost my mucus plug 6 weeks ago and had the bloody show 2 weeks ago and just been losing my plug every day since. Probably because I am dilated, so as it regenerates I lose it. Anyone think this might work?? I sure hope to have my baby in 2 days from now. I have been pretty crampy since they did it 4 hours ago. Yet, thats to be expected.

Daniella - I'm so glad to see that you've made it this far. Let's hope we'll be meeting our babies SOON!
