Stripping The Membranes

Ok I am 99% positive this question has been asked 1,000,000 times but I cannot find a recent post about this so I am going to go ahead and ask. I just went for my weekly appointment last night ( I am 37 1/2 weeks with my first child) and my doctor said that my next appointment (July 17th) is going to be more aggressive because she is going to start to strip my membranes. My questions are, what does this process involve? Does it hurt? And what are the chances it will bring on labor? If it does bring on labor, how quickly does it happen? As of right now I am 1 - 2 cm dilated, I know my cervix has thinned out because I have a lot of mucus discharge (which I am told is from me thinning out), she just didn't tell me last night if I have and how much. And I have lost my mucus plug. So any information that can be provided to me would be greatly appreciated.

well im getting it done tomorrow and from my understanding its wher ethe dr sticks his or her fingers between the cervix and bag of water and run it across therefore stripping the membranes nad releasing the bag of water from the cervix wall...my dr told me it will hurt alot but alot of ppl on here said it didnt that it was only uncomfortable adnfrom what ive read there is only a 20% chance it will briong on labor within the first 7 days so hopefully taht helps thats all ive been able to find out x.x i wishyou luck with your stripping ^_^ ill let you no tomorrow after i have mine done how it was ok :)

Thanks for the reply. And please do let me know tomorrow how it was. I got the feeling from my doctor that it was not going to be an easy exam and that is why she gave me the heads up about it being a more aggressive exam. Plus as I was making my next appointment she was telling me spotting after my exam last night is expected/normal. But next week I really should expect to be spotting after, and that that is what she will be looking for. All I can say is I am not looking forward that appointment because as it is, they are uncomfortable now. But definitly write back and let me kow you survived having it done, LOL!

LOL ill definately let you know :) im scared but its worth it if it gets this baby out of me XD im beg my dr to 'accidently' brake my water lol it sucks tho because im going to be riding the bus to and from my appointment so i hope i go nto labor immediately cuz i live across town form the hospital x.x or else iw ait till after hubby gets home to drive me back lol whens your due date btw? mines july 26th :) ill be 38 weeks exactly

DWilson924 - July 11

Ok so you are a brave woman, LOL. I will definitly keep you in mind tomorrow and hope everything, including the bus ride, works out for you. My due date is July 27. Do you know what you are having? I'm having a littel boy, Logan Alexander. But I agree that it's worth it if it gets the little one to come out. I just hope it works. I have been checking into some websites today about sweeping/stripping membranes, and I am not liking the results I am finding. It says on some of the sites that sweeping/stripping the membranes does not always bring on labor. But in some cases it brings it on with in 24 - 48 hours. I really hope that for the both of us it brings it on fairly quickly. Actually my nieces birthday is July 18th, so maybe her birthday present that day will be the birth of her first cousion.

hehe your due the day after me ^_^ im also having a little boy named Alexzander Lee XD yeah liek i said theres only like 20% chance of going into labor :( i hope we are in taht 20% lol

DWilson924 - July 11

20% that's it. I didn't see that part. Wow that really make sme nervous. Well like you said, hopefully we are both in that 20%.

hhhmmmm. I've had a previous c section and I scheduled a c section on the 18th. But I told the dr if I go into labor between now and then, I'd like to "try" I wonder why she hasnt suggested stripping my membranes? She will not induce me with pitocin.

DWilson924 - July 11

That is weird why she won't try that first. A friend of mine, who has the same doctor as me, was scheduled for a C-Section (it was her 3rd child) and the doctor still stripped her membranes to help get her along. What was the worst that could happen? She not go into labor and have to wait until her scheduled c-setion date, which by the way did not happen. Stripping them helpd move things right along with her and she had her baby v____ally before her c-setcion date. I'd ask your doctor if I were you.

Hi DWilson, Right now I'm 39+5. I was stripped at 37+6, I was 1 CM dialated and was still very thick. I bled afterwards quite a bit (which can be normal) I lost my plug that night. Last Thursday I woke with a bloody show. I'm still pregnant. I'm so anxious. I've tried many natural ways to induce but still nothing yet. I have contractions quite often although there is no regularity to them. I so hope that the stripping will work for you however know that it still may be a couple weeks before you deliver. Good Luck!

Keli, Are there any midwives in your practice that you are going to? I had this done because I'm seeing a midwive. All of the girls in our child birthing cla__ses went to a practice with OBGYN's only, not one of them ever heard of stripping or had that done. Maybe it's mostly a midwife thing? I'm not sure.

Mellissa - July 11

hey ya'll... a friend of mine had her membranes stripped and that night her water started leaking. i wasn't so lucky.. i had mine stripped every week from 36-42 with my daughter, and nothing. this time i had them stripped last friday at 38+1 and had contractions for 24 hours, every ten minutes.. then they stopped!! my midwife told me if your body is ready, you should go into labor 48 hours after the stripping. guess my little one isn't ready to get here yet! hopefully ya'll will have better luck!!!

DWilson924 - July 11

Well I guess one way of looking at it is either way I am having my son soon because from what my doctor said last night, if I am not in labor by my 39th week we will discuss my next option. So I do not think she is going to let me go past my due date. Plus I am a "diet controlled diabetic" which means I have gest. diabetes but it is so minor that I am able to keep it under control by watching my diet. So everyone is telling me that is another reason why she won't let me past my due date. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that either way I have my little boy in the next 2 weeks or so. But I am still quite hopeful that this whole stripping the membranes thing works and I have him by next weekend. Everyone at my work is taking bets that I go around the 20 - 24th. So we will see who wins this pool.

erenimi - July 11

I had mine stripped when i was 39 weeks and went into labor 2 days later. When i got them stripped my OB said "see you this weekend" and he did! I was only 1 to 2 cm dialated too.

erenimi - July 11

oh, and it didn't hurt at all.

DWilson924 - July 11

Erenimi, It really didn't hurt at all? And that is awesome that you went into labor that quickly. I am honestly hoping I am one of the lucky ones that goes into labor from it. As I said in my original post I am 1-2 cm and have to be thinning out because I am constantly experience a think, mucus discharge (sorry tmi) which everyone is telling that is my cervix thinning out. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that with her sweeping my membranes and having lots of s_x this week, that I will have this kid by the 20th. I am just beyond uncomfortable, mainly because of my swollen feet and ankles. But I'm sure I don't have to explain to anyone on this web site how uncomfortable I am. That's the nice part about chatting on here, is there is no explanation needed because we are all in the same boat! :o)

JillyBilly - July 11

erenimi, wow you were lucky, it hurt when I had mine stripped. I swear she punched me from the inside, but it only hurt for a few moments so it wasn't to bad. I bled afterwards, my midwife didn't want to do it again my next visit, which was last week. I'm due tthis hursday and have many labor symptoms but no real labor yet. My next visit is Friday. I wonder if she will do it then if I don't go into labor before then. So I hurry up to wait some more.
