Thalassemia Query Please Respond

Hi! I am 34 weeks pregnant and was adviced a haemoglobin electrophoresis because of reduced haemoglobin levels(8.8) despite taking iron supplement. The report says it is suggestive of beta thalassemia trait/intermedia. I called up my doctor immediately and she suggested the same test for my husband. I am really very afraid. What if he also is a carrier? What do i conclude if he is not? Has anyone gone thru this? Am I going to lose my baby? Am I going to die giving birth? please. I need prayers and advice. Warm Regards, Ekta.

Ekta- It is a very serious disease. My grandmother, mother, myself, and my sister have it. Some of our children have it and some are carriers. You or your husband have to have the trait for your child to either have it or be a carrier. I went through extensive testing at 15 weeks and actually they could not find the link so I had my cells frozen at amnio for further DNA testing. You or your child will not die, but you must take very good care of yourself. Make sure your husband gets tested. You dcotor may put you on iron supplements. Let me know. Good luck and cvalm down.
