Just curious for those who started getting internal exams, what week did you start dilating and effacing. What week and what was your progress. thanks.

for me, i was nothing at week 38, and dilated a fingertip (1 cm?) at 39 weeks :)

At my appointment last week (39th week) all my doctor said was I was dilated a fingertip and was softening up. Krista-lee is that what your doctor told you...that a fingertip is considered 1cm? My doctor did not explain, and I have so many questions to ask him....I felt like I needed to shut my mouth at that point.

My last week appt. (wendesday) I was 37 weeks and I was almost fully effaced and im 2.5 cm dilated!

ashley - June 4

wow! corine is this your first?

ReneeM - June 4

Last week at my 37 wk appointment I was 75% effaced and 2 cm dilated, this week at the 38 wks, I was 90% and still 2 cm. The baby's head is at 0 station. My midwife told me I would probably go in the next week. That was almost 6 days ago. So I am just patiently waiting, or at least trying to! also I think 1 cm is about a fingertip. Good luck to all!

Ashley, yeah this is my first baby! The doctor told me at my 34 week appt. that she was already in position to come out! I was totally amazed! I will tell you if anything has changed on tuesday after my appt! Good Luck!

Renee-wow sunds like you are getting closer too. Corrine-I was told my baby is in position. Infact he is head down WAY down. So down that its ver uncomfortable to walk. Corrine or Renee how soon did you get your first internal and were you doing anything then?

ReneeM - June 5

ashley- I got my first internal at 36 wks, the doctor did that one, she just said cervix is soft, dilated to 1cm and baby has dropped (he had actually dropped around 35 weeks). The 37 wk was done by midwife, which was 75%, and 2cm, and baby at -1 station, then 38 week was 90% and 2cm with baby at 0 station. Last tues she said since I had been making good progress she thought I would go into labor in the next week. Well, it has been almost a week and nothing, well except for a lot of BH, some menstrual type cramps with backache, and some pressure down low, but no hard contractions. I go back tomorrow for 39 week appoint. Guess i will see what's going on. I agree though, it does get uncomfortable to walk when their little heads get so low! Also, I have been so tired the past few days like all I want to do is sleep! Oh well, guess I should take advantage of it! How far along are you, Ashley?

I was 0 cm effaced and 0 cm dialated at my 39 week appointment on Wednesday. Doctor said there was no way I was going to go into labor anytime soon, but I went into labor the next night.

Renee-I am only 33 weeks and anxiously awaiting....I had an OB appointment and I asked when she usually started internal exams and she said we could do one at my next appointment which I'll be 35 weeks along. I get to do my group B strep test as well. My OB doc is so laid back. I really like her. I know I am thinking way to far ahead, but I have had this strange gut feeling that I am going to go early with this one... I just hope when i feel that I am going to go early that its not TOO early. I had a scare last week. I had lots of menstral type cramping, diarrhea and some real thick mucous and got nervous. Turned out to be a viral stomach bug of some sort. Renee I sure hope you have some luck soon as you seem to be making progress. I realize I could dialate and efface fast and still go past my due date, Im just trying to find out what others are doing... What are you having Renee do you know? Any names picked out yet? I am having a boy and we still don't have a name picked out! YIKES!

ashley - June 5

by the way this is baby #2 for me if I didn't mention that earlier. I am just curious if you dialate faster with #2 or not?

I thought I would of gone into labor by now with the progress, but I haven't. Like Kayla S said, she had not done anything and went into labor the next night. Here I am almost totally thinned out and dilated at a 2 for a week! I guess everyone is so different! As far as progression with your 2nd baby, I don't know, this is my 1st. I must say that I don't know what is worse, knowing you have made some early progress and not go as early as you thought you would, or find out you have made no progress. I am thinking now that finding out was a mistake because it has frustrated me a little wondering why i haven't gone into labor yet. Oh well! Btw, I am having a boy also! His name will be Wyatt, I have loved that name ever since watching the movie Tombstone! Good luck with everything, I'll try to keep you posted.

ashley - June 6

yes definitely keep me posted! My friend I think was dialated at a 3 for a couple weeks with her second child. I think they finally induced her, but it went really fast because of the progress she made. I guess be happy that you are already at a 2 and thinned. With my first I was 1 cm dialated and thinned at 80% and my water broke and had to be induced the rest of the way and got stuck at 3 for what seemed like forever! So 2 cm dialated and fully effaced is good!

ReneeM - June 6

I went back to the dr today, was still the same as last week! Still about 90% and at 2 cm. It seemed like I was doing good there for a while, but now I am stuck! I am 39 wks tomorrrow. The dr. said "well you're almost there, it is just right around the corner!" I guess we will see! No telling how long i could stay like this, maybe another week. This past week I have tried walking, swimming, spicy foods, even s_x, nothing is working. It will just happen in its on time I guess. I am now just trying to enjoy my last few days of sleep!

ashley - June 6

Renee-when you say you "tried" do you mean just once? As far as the s_x thing goes. I was told in my ob nursing cla__ses that s____n contains prostiglandins and it softens the cervix, which sounds like you are just fine in that department, lol being 90% effaced. I would take bumpy rides, do some brisk walking. I would continually try things, lol. I know I will be..... I get my first internal check in two weeks at my next appointment. My ob doc has been pretty sympathetic to my aches and pains this pregnancy has brought me and I think she may be generous and strip my membranes, try to help speed things along, etc when I start dialating/effacing and I am far enough along! I enjoy our chatting so please keep me updated as often as you can... I like to hear of your progress..... Heck have you tried jumping up and down, lol

Hey Ladies - thought I'd chime in. I went to 42 weeks (and then was induced) and the baby hadn't dropped, I wasn't at all dilated, and not at all effaced. I tried everything (and I mean everything) at least 8 times. I walked 2 miles a day, hiked several miles (yes, up hills/mts) on weekends, ate and drank everything ever recommended by every old wive's tale (except castor oil), and nothing worked. The baby will come when s/he's ready. There's NOTHING you can do to move him or her along faster. Oh, and yes, my little one was born at 6lbs 12ozs only - and I'm certain my dates were on. She just needed the extra time and I feel bad that I "forced" her out early. Best of luck to you all!
