we had our dd 18 month appt this mrng and I was disappointed that she only put on very little weight between her 15 and 18 months....she's now 21lbs 9 oz and only put on 3oz in 3months!! She's kind of a picky eater but I thought she was eating better last few months...she was soo chubby and cute when she was born but now looks very thin. :( How much did your lo's weigh & put on between appts? We go in 2-3 months to check her weight again. Her height is 33 inches, so she's pretty tall...the dr didn't seem very concerned with her weight as she's hitting her milestones pretty well...but i'm the one who's worried. What would you feed to get her to put on more weight?

Did they tell you what percentile shes in? My little girl is 19 months old and 26 lbs and 32 1/2 inches tall......and she looks tall and skinny but the dr seemed very happy.

Nita - if her doctor isn't concerned I wouldn't be either. A LOT goes on between 15 and 18 months. Your DD probably learned how to walk, run, jump, climb, and if she's anything like my 19 month old she's on the go all the time. It's not that your DD isn't eating well, she simply is burning more energy. As long as she's gaining weight (which she is) and as long as she's developing normally, there's nothing to worry about. I would worry though about trying to fatten her up. If you try to give her more foods, or higher fat foods, it may not be too good for her system and you may put her on the track for weight issues (obesity) down the line. But, should you choose to try to get more calories into her, I have a friend who's 18 month old weight only (gasp) 18 lbs. Her doctor recommended high fat foods - b___ter on everything, heavy cream mixed with foods (mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, etc). But again, that's for a little girl who weighs 3 lbs less than your DD. I wouldn't do anything outside of giving your LO healthful, nutritious options and the rest will take care of itself.

If you think she isn't getting quite enough you could always give her some pediasure once a day in her sippy cup. It comes in a few different flavors and would add some nutrition to her diet if need be. If you don't want to give it full strength, you can dilute it with milk.

My dd is almost 18 months old and she is just now 20 lbs. So don't feel bad, it's alright.

Thanks ladies! bean--your post really made me feel better. and you are so right, my dd HAS indeed learnt tons of stuff in the past 2-3 months! She's doesn't walk these days, she just runs!! so you may be right about her burning more calories...the past few days she's had a cold, so maybe that explains why she didn't so well. But today she ate well for lunch and yday too. **mjvdec01** i did see pediasure, but it's so expensive it seemed...i just didn't get it in case she didn't like it....i did get the bars and she eats 1/2 or less of it once in a while but not everyday. I'll TRY and not worry about it much.

my dd was 18.5 lbs at a year and now at 16 months she's only 22lbs. She's not a big one - people always thinks she's younger than she is because she's so small. The dr isn't concerned though...

my 15mo twins are starting to gain weight really slowly, too and the doc says its partially due to more activity that burns more calories and partially due to the natural slow in growth after the 1st year and not to be concerned with it. As long as her behavior is normal and she's not losing weight then you really shouldn't be concerned. And you say she's tall... that's a good sign :) If she were malnourished, she wouldn't grow upwards.

hi! one thing you need to remember is how much your child weighed when she was born. my son weighed in at 8lb 10 oz at birth and has always gained weight at a pretty consent amount. he is now 16months old and weighs about 33lbs and about 34 in tall. he was only 20 3/4in at birth so he is getting tall just as fast as he is gaining weight. another thing to look at is ask your mom and you MIL how you and your dd father gained weight at that age. both me and my bf we big babies. i was 9lb at birth and my bf was 9lb 6oz at birth so it runs in the family. unless your dr. is worried about her you shouldnt be either.
