I went through the same problem. I went ahead and had an ultrasound and found out that I was indeed having twins. The doctor then had to recalculate the AFP test, and my chances of Downs were even higher, plus he told me that if I was having identical, they both would have Downs. Needless to say I was freaking out. I was excited and petrified all at the same time. I went to see a high risk doctor who was going to measure the babies skin folds to see if they could be Downs. I was told by my regular OB that his predicitions are 70% accurate, but the high risk doctor could not speculate, and advised me if I wanted to know for sure, to have an amnio. I was all alone, and scared out of my mind, but I decided to have the amnio. I had already prepared in my mind that if one baby was Downs I could handle it, but if they were both, I don't know what I would have done, to be honest. I had the test, and needless to say, the next two weeks of my life were the longest, and hardest, waiting for the results. Two weeks from the date, my doctor called me to inform me that I was having two healthy girls. I know it is easy for me to say don't freak out, have the ultrasound, and go from there. Good Luck.
