What Are The Chances Of Me Having Twins Again

What are my chances of having twins again? I gave birth to identical twin boys 6 weeks ago, at 30 weeks I went into early labour frightened my boys would be poorly to find out only one heartbeat (my scan 2 weeks before had shown all was well), while I was monitored my other boy died. It was put down to acute twin to twin transfusion syndromme. I dont understand why a c-section wasnt carried out to try and save my dear baby. Can anyone advise on why this would happen. I would love to have twins again, have wanted them since as long as I can remember and my husband is the same. Twins runs in my family and my husbands.

I am very sorry for your loss. I had twins that I lost but the one twin was at 11 and the surviving twin I lost at 36 weeks. As for your chances of having twins, identical twins are not hereditary. Everyone has the same chance of identicals which is 1 in 250. Fraternal twins are hereditary which have to run on the mother's (you) side since the father (your dh) won't play a part in how many eggs you release. If they do run in your family, your chance increases but not by much. It is about a 3-5% chance. If your twins were fraternal, your chance would be much highers since it would show that you ovulate more than one egg.

Hi sweetie I'm so sorry for your loss. I couldn't tell you why they didn't do a c-section, maybe it just happened too fast. I would suggest scheduling an appointment with your OB to go over your case in detail. (He/she should have offered this to you.) That way you can ask all the questions you need.... If you need additional support from other moms like me go over to the pregnancy loss, miscarriage forum. I started a thread called "Getting ready to ttc again - Please join us" There are several who have lost 2nd and 3rd trimester babies there, we will be happy to talk to you. (I lost a baby at 22weeks, 6 1/2 weeks ago)... Also unfortunately identical twins are just a spontaneous thing that happens, there is no evidence that genetics have any influence on it so the chance of identicals happening again are very rare. Fraternal twins can run in families but are only pa__sed through the female line. So if your mother, grandmother or maternal aunts have had fraternal twins then you would have a slight increase in chance. Unfortunately your husband's family history has no influence. (((hugs)))
