The Flu, The Swine Flu, and Pregnancy
Any type of flu, including swine flu, is especially risky for pregnant women. Margaret Chan, the director of the World Health Organization, said, "Without question pregnant women are at increased risk of complications. This heightened risk takes on added importance for a virus, like this one (swine flu), that preferentially infects younger age groups." A pregnant woman's immune system is naturally suppressed so that her body doesn't identify her baby as a foreign object to be rejected. Therefore, pregnant women are more susceptible to all infections, including the flu. In the US, all pregnant women are advised to receive the flu vaccination. If a pregnant women does contract the swine flu, it is recommended that she be treated with Relenza rather than Tamiflu, although both drugs have been found not to pose a risk to the unborn child.
