Men Share Partner's Pregnancy Symptoms, Study Finds
Specialists from the University of London have conducted a study suggesting that men whose partners are pregnant experience pregnancy symptoms such as cramps, back pain, mood swings, food cravings, morning sickness, extreme tiredness, depression, irritability, fainting and toothaches. The study followed 282 expectant fathers between the ages of 19 and 55 throughout their partner's pregnancy, and were compared to a control group of 281 men whose partners were not pregnant. The most common of these symptoms among men were stomach cramps, which in some cases were reportedly similar to labor contractions in women. The phenomenon of experiencing pregnancy "sympathy pains" is also known as Couvade Syndrome. However, there is no official medical diagnosis of the syndrome.

Pregnancy HIV Transmission Higher in Twins
Researchers from the University of Paris have published a report in the journal AIDS with findings that suggest the transmission of HIV from mothers to newborns is higher when giving birth to twins. The findings are based on studies conducted prior to the advent of combination anti-HIV drugs (HAART) which suggest that the rate of mother-to-child HIV transmission is 2 to 3 times higher in twin pregnancies, in comparison to singleton pregnancies. The risk was even higher in multiple pregnancies in which premature rupture of the sac membranes surrounding the fetus took place, or in cases of preterm delivery. Since 1997, with the introduction of HAART, the rates have been similar in both multiple and single pregnancies. It is recommended that anti-HIV therapy begin no later than the second trimester.

Temperature Sensitivity May Put Fetus At Risk
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has warned that heat exposure from the sun during the first three months of pregnancy may put a fetus at risk of having a low birth weight. In addition, sensitivity to high temperatures can make an expectant mother feel particularly unwell. Similarly, exposure to low temperatures during the last three months of pregnancy may have the same effects. The warning was issued in anticipation of a summer heat wave in Britain. Experts referred to previous studies, with particular focus on research conducted by Bristol University, published in the British Journal of Gynaecology in 2005. The RCOG advised that pregnant women take certain precautions - such as drinking plenty of fluids and wearing appropriate clothing such as hats - in order to avoid heat exhaustion. The symptoms of heat exhaustion include increased body temperature, tiredness, light-headedness and a dry mouth.
