Cesarean Delivery May Complicate Future Deliveries
A new study has revealed that women who undergo a cesarean delivery during their first birth may develop complications during their second pregnancy. The study examined 637,497 women experiencing their first and second births and discovered that, when compared to women who had a vaginal delivery during their first birth, women who had a cesarean section during their first birth more than doubled their risk during their second pregnancy of developing pre-eclampsia, placenta abnormalities, or giving birth to a smaller than average baby. The researchers believe that “an increased risk of complications after a cesarean delivery may be caused by the cesarean delivery itself." More information about this study can be obtained in the June 2008 edition of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
