Stress In Pregnancy Linked To Stillbirth
A new study has revealed that women under intense stress during pregnancy are at increased risk for stillbirth. Danish researchers analyzed 19,282 women carrying single fetus pregnancies over a ten year period. Information was obtained from these women on the kind of psychological stress they were experiencing throughout their pregnancy. Scores of 0-6 were considered low levels of psychological stress, scores of 7-11 were considered medium levels, and scores of 12-36 were considered to be high levels. Throughout the study sixty-six stillbirths occurred (3.4%) in the women taking part in the study. When researchers compared the rate of stillbirths in women who scored 12-36 on their stress tests to women with lower scores, they discovered that women with high levels of stress have an 80% increased risk for stillbirth. This was a shocking discovery for the medical community and, as this was the first real study of its kind, more research is needed before conclusive assessments can be made.
