Pregnant Women Should Avoid Acne Cream
A new study conducted in India has revealed that many of the popular acne creams that use the ingredients sodium sulfacetamide, tretinoin, adapalene, and azelaic acid, can lead to toxic poisoning in babies. This exposure can result in anemia and jaundice in new babies and can even lead to miscarriage of the pregnancy. Shivani Sachdev Gaur, a consultant gynecologist with the Fortis Hospital, said that these medicines even taken one month prior to conception can cause harm to the fetus. Experts say, "“The cream gets absorbed from the skin, goes into the mother’s bloodstream and passes through placenta into the bloodstream of the fetus.” Any women planning on becoming pregnant, or who is already pregnant, is advised to stop using their acne cream and to consult with their healthcare provider about whether their cream is safe for continued use.
