Foods To Avoid When Pregnant
Posted on Mon Oct 19, 2009Foods To Avoid When Pregnant
While most pregnant women already know about the dangers of alcohol, cigarettes, and raw meat (like sushi) while pregnant, surprising few know they also need to avoid all soft cheeses (like brie, camembert and Mexican style cheeses), any unpasteurized dairy, and all deli meats (like salami, bologna, and turkey), as well as hot dogs, when pregnant. This is due to the dangers of contracting a listeriosis bacteria. While anyone who eats these foods is at risk of listeriosis, most people will never feel its symptoms. However, a pregnant woman's immune system is severely compromised due to the pregnancy which leaves her very vulnerable to this infection. Contracting listeriosis during pregnancy can lead to preterm labor or even miscarriage. Sometimes the infection can even cause death.
