I think it really depends on the person and her coach. I don't have a problem with immediate family such as a sister or mother but I don't really think it's appropriate for fathers or father in laws to be present, also I think small children shouldn't be there either, there comes a time for privacy.

When my first child was born several years ago, my mother-in-law insisted on being in the room. She sat at the foot of the bed drinking a Coke in front of me as I puked my guts out & they wouldn't even let me have a drink of water, of course. I was extremely uncomfortable having her in the room & she was absolutely no help to me at all throughout my long labor. All I can say is thank God I am having a c-section this time & only my husband is allowed in the O.R. She lives in a distant state, and needless to say, she is not even bothering to come this time. I am grateful! She shouldn't have been there the first time.

With my first child, I was no longer with the father and I had my mom and dad, my grandparents and my best friend in the room with me and it was a great experience. Therefore, with this one I am planning the same birthday party. My son will be 8, and he will be there as long as he wants, also my husband, my parents, and most likely my grandparents and cousin also. I think it is a positive experience that everyone should get a chance to witness.
