i bottle fed my first child and my 5 week old is currently breastfeeding. i believe in the benefits of breastfeeding but i also get bothered by the idea that bottle fed babies are not as smart as breastfed. my six year old is one of the smartest kids in his first grade class and he was always ahead of his peers. i don't see the difference in the development of my children they're equally bright

I had a tough start to breastfeeding and have compromised by exclusively pumping. It's time-consuming, but I'm still able to provide 3 bottles of my milk and 2 bottles of formula, but at least I can do that!!!

Sure breastfeeding is the best option, BUT sometimes it is not an option. My son was born with a tumor in his neck and a torn neck muscle (we didn't know bout it at first), and he could not position his head in the correct way to latch on. Every time I tried breastfeeding he would scream bloody murder. I was so relieved to just feed him with a bottle after many days of trying. I HATE it when people comment that they would ONLY breastfeed because you don't know the situation that you will be in. Be flexible and do what is best for you and baby!

I will definitely breastfeed, I did with my 1st child and I will with all my children! The bonding was great and to me it wasn't painful, until my son's baby teeth started coming out :) All and all he is healthy and it is a great accomplishment for me to know that I can nourish my child.

I'd like to breastfeed, plan on doing it for 6 months to a year. The first 3 months are the most important, after that its just a bonus. However am afraid of not having enough milk or not being able to because i had an absess (pus filled lump) removed from my left breast 10yrs ago. The doctor cut me open along my nipple and i never thought to ask about how it would affect breastfeeding or if he would take extra care not to damage milk ducts (i was only 21yrs). Am so afraid the operation has ruined my milk ducts and only one boob will work and that it won't give enough milk and also that i'll have lop-sided boobs because one is full of milk and the other all shrivelled! Have been told there is no way to tell until i try. P.S. Jackie - breastfeeding shouldn't hurt at all if it does you are not doing it right, don't be afraid to see a lactation consultant, every hospital has one.
