Hi ladies. I too wanted to share my experience with Misoprostol. The information provided in this post made a very traumatic time more bearable. At the very least I knew what to expect and that made all the difference in the world.
I'm 31, my husband is 37, and this was the first time I had ever been pregnant. At about 11 weeks I had my first ultrasound and was told that a fetus had developed but their was no heartbeat and it measured only about 8 weeks. I had told my husband a few weeks earlier that I no longer felt as intensely pregnant as I had earlier on. At the time I didn't think anything was wrong (no symptoms or signs) and just assumed it was perhaps the calm of approaching the second trimester. Knowing I had felt that way helped me to believe 100% in the doctor's diagnosis and know without a doubt (well okay only a little doubt) that the baby really wasn't alive anymore.
I was offered the choice of waiting it out and letting the miscarriage progress naturally, having a D&C, or taking the medication. I opted for the medication because I didn't want to have things happen while I was at work or someplace else that I couldn't get home quickly.
I took 4 200 mg pills vaginally at 10pm on Sunday evening. My husband was home and I would definitely recommend to anyone going through this to make sure someone will be with you the entire time and also to make sure any young children have someone to watch them during that time. I would even go so far as recommending that even older children be out of the house as you will go through some bad spells and it may frighten them.
About an hour to an hour and a half after inserting the pills I had a sudden bought of diarrhea and also a small amount of bleeding (brownish in color and light). The pain at this point was minimal, sort of like mild period cramps.
For the next hour and a half the cramping become more severe and I had more diarrhea. I took 1 of the vicaden my dr had prescribed and these helped ease the pain.
I passed the fetus somewhere around 3 to 5 hours after inserting the pills (time got a bit fuzzy). I apologize if this is too much information but I just couldn't flush my little one and was lucky that I had caught it in my hand. I called my husband in and he put it in a small wooden box we had prepared. It was about the size of a prune. That was by far the largest item that I would pass the entire time.
I took a second vicaden about an hour after the first as the pain had become more intense in preparation of passing the fetus.
Afterwards I experienced a strange feeling of calm. I remember sitting on the couch talking to my husband and telling him that even though I was still sad I felt that I now accepted the loss and was ready to move on. I honestly think seeing the fetus and knowing it would be properly buried helped me greatly. To some it might be too much but I think I really needed he closure.
Just when I thought the worst was over around 5am (7 hours after i inserted the pills) I experienced what I would say is the worst pain of my life (of course I've never been through childbirth). My uterus experienced contractions roughly 1 minute apart for about an hour. When they first started I threw up which was definitely not pleasant. I took 2 more vicaden and while it took the edge off the pain there really wasn't much I could do but ride it out. I screamed, yelled, and every time a contraction came I had the worst chills. I eventually passed into a fitful sleep and woke up around 6am (8 hours after inserting the pills). After this point there was only minimal bleeding, the contractions had subsided and my husband and I got off the couch and went up to get a few hours sleep.
Most of the next day I was tired but that was about it. My uterus and vagina were both a bit sore and bruised feeling, but nothing terrible. Later that day what I'd call a heavy period started and continues into day 2.
2 days after taking the medication (Tuesday) I had a follow-up appt with my dr. She performed a vaginal ultrasound which showed everything had passed and only a small amount of lining remained (normal and what would pass during a regular period). I was told that the severe contractions I had experienced towards the end were completely normal and actually the bodies way of preventing excess bleeding. I was told to wait for 1 normal period before trying to conceive. She said the period would come anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks after I took the medication. She recommended using protection to prevent pregnancy until after the first period.
I hope this information helps those who are going through something similar. My heart goes out to anyone having to deal with this, but for me the medication was the right decision. If I had to do it all over again (God forbid) I would again choose the medication.
If your doctor will allow it I highly recommend that you get something for the pain. The vicaden worked for me and did not make me light-headed, woozy, or upset my stomach (the throwing up took place many hours after I took the first doses).
Hang in there and know that you will get through this.
The day I took my medication happened to be a Sunday and the sermon at my church that morning was the story of God blessing Abraham and his wife Sarah (both well past the child bearing years) with a child of their own. I took comfort in hearing that story and know that sometime in the future we will be blessed with a child (or two!)
