I'm really glad I found this forum before taking the Misoprostol. I'd like to share my experience.
I am 28 years old and my daughter was 8 months old when I found out I was pregnant for the third time. We had a miscarriage before we got pregnant with our daughter. We had not been trying but decided that it was a good thing and were happy that we were pregnant. We thought everything was fine until at 12 weeks we went for the first ultrasound and discovered that I had had a miscarriage at 7 weeks due to a blighted ovum. I had never even heard of it before. We were very shocked. I hadn't had any bleeding or cramping at all. My midwives referred me to an OB/GYN who I hated and he gave me a perscription for Misoprostol without telling me how to take it or without giving me any pain medication. I spoke to my midwives again and they told me how to take it and said I could take tylenol and gravol with it.
I waited until my husband got home and then took 3 tablets orally at 11pm on Tuesday night (which was the entire perscription). Within 40 minutes, the cramping started and got progressively worse. By midnight I had severe stomach pains that were similar to but worse than the labour pain from when I had my daughter. I was bleeding heavily and passing multiple clots every single time I went to the washroom (which was about every 10-15 minutes). I was also vomiting. I had taken 4 extra strength Tylenol and 2 extra strength gravol and they did nothing for me. At 1 am, my husband called for an ambulance and I was taken to the hospital.
I was given a shot of demerol, which again, did nothing. I was still having severe pains and basically having contractions every minute or so. They eventually put me on a morphine drip which finally stopped the pain. I was in the hospital the entire day. My husband would wheel me to the washroom and it was all I could do to just get from the wheelchair to the toilet without passing out. As it was, once I got on the toilet, it took me 5 minutes of leaning over the garbage can to finally not feel like I was going to black out or vomit.
The gynecologist came to see me mid afternoon after I had another ultrasound to see how things were going. She told me I needed a D&C anyway. At this point, I was fine with the D&C, I just wanted it all over with. I wanted to go home and sleep.
All in all, I would definately NOT reccomend Misoprostol to anyone. But if you do decide to take it, please follow the advice of me and many other people who have posted on this board and make sure you have someone with you and someone to look after any children you have.
The D&C was fine. They put me to sleep and it was done in about 5 minutes. Then I went to recovery for another hour and went home after that. I was told to expect bleeding similar to a period for about 4 days and cramping also. I was perscribed Tylenol 3's and was sent home. I got home at about 9:30pm on Wednesday and went right to bed without taking any of the T3's. When I woke up in the morning, my legs felt rubbery because of not walking all day, but other than that, I felt fine. I had no cramping at all and no bleeding at all...not even spotting.
If this ever happens to me again...I would definately choose to do the D&C right from the beginning!
