I guess I can comment on both Cytotec and D&C, having started with one and ended with the other. How I wish I'd have had access to this forum before making my decision.

I chose the Cytotek at 10 am, and not much happened until severe cramps at 2:30pm. For about 1/2 hour, found the pain excruciating and didn't think I could take another dose of pain meds at that time. I almost went to the hospital for stronger pain meds. I passed two big blood clots, but hadn't passed the sac (incidentally, I thought I had passed the sac, but if it's uniformly dark brownish in color, it's a blood clot). I don't have a significant other in my life, and found it stressful to arrange finding people to stay with me all day on a Friday while I did this treatment. I was, however, grateful to have the emotional support and company of my friends, which was one nice part of the Cytotec experience. But unlike the rest of people who took a 2nd dose the same day, I was told to do it the next day. I'm glad that my spiked temperature made my sister (an obstetrician) insist I go to the ER, because I don't think I could have emotionally taken another day of trying to miscarry. As well, it is a big weight to put on my support systems (my Dr. said I shouldn't be alone, which I agree with). Given that I later learned I hadn't dilated at all on day 1, my sister tells me I would have had a miserable time with the pain had I fully dilated on Day 2.

Re: the D and C, with the exception of the nasty nurse who hurt me like crazy inserting my IV line, the rest of my D and C experience was so peaceful that I wish I'd done it right away. I think I'd skip the Cytotek for sure next time. There was no pain or cramping after the surgery, except for a very sore throat for a couple of days because I was intubated.

Just know that if things aren't going well with the Cytotec, you might want to avoid eating or drinking so you can get a D and C quickly...

If your pain tolerance is poor, the D and C may be better....
