I am now 32 wks pregnant and have been battling kidney stone issues since 21 wks. I ended up in the ER with severe pain and vomiting. After 2 days, the urologist put a stent in. I passed a stone 3 wks later and things went downhill from there. The stent started causing lots of pain and the urologist was a jerk! He basically said there was nothing that could be done until the baby was born and told me to talk to my OB about the pain. OB sent me back to him because he didn't feel that the stent should be causing so much trouble. The urologist sent me for an ultrasound but never gave me results and then sent a letter to my OB saying he didn't want to deal with me until after the baby. After feeling like a ping-pong ball, I sought out another urologist. He said the ultrasound showed several stones (largest 1.5 cm) in my kidney so he didn't feel removing the stent was an option but that it needed changed. He said during pregnancy stents should be changed every 6 weeks because of buildup(I had had mine for 10). I had the surgery on Thursday and the stent was heavily encrusted (he had trouble removing it.) He also told me that had it been left in until I deliver (what the original urologist planned to do) it would have been stuck for sure! My advice to anyway with this problem is to ask lots of questions and, if you arent' getting any answers, seek out someone who will help. Pregnancy limits what can be done about stones but its not an excuse for poor care.
