Best To Quot Ration Quot Stored Breastmilk

Since I've returned to work, my ds has started refusing to nurse and now will not nurse at all. I'm pumping at work, but only about 3 oz/day. I was a dumb-dumb and didn't have enough of a stockpile before returning, so we had to start supplementing with formula. My question is... to optimize the health benefits of br___tmilk, is it better to ration out what little milk I'm able to pump over a longer period of time, or give him a larger quant_ties over a shorter period of time? My already small supply will probably dry up pertty quickly, and I haven't been able to find any info on this ANYWHERE. Right now, we're giving him the 3 oz per day and filling in the rest w/formula. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm sorry. I don't know the answer, but I was wondering if you went to Penn State or live in State College, PA.... from your screen name... I'm from PA.

Hey, I dont have an answer for you question but I have heard some things about upping your supply with a pump. (works better with an electric) I dont know if this is true but it seems to be helping me along, slowly but still helping. Pump more often, every few hours if possible, and after the heavy milk stops flowing keep pumping for 3-5 minutes even though your not getting anything. The point is to stimulate milk supply. Hope this helps some!

Also some other things that have been helping me are pumping both sides at the same time (duel pumping), and when I pump, (after heavy flow) I firmly squeez my b___bs. It helps to get out some of the hind milk. Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the tips Erica. I am dual pumping, but my supply is slowly decreasing anyway. He's 5 months old now, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I dry up. I guess I was just wondering if it's better to give him larger amounts of b___stmilk say, every other day, or give him a small amount every day. I just can't find any info on what's best. I guess I'll call my ped. and see what he has to say. Thanks for the responses ladies. I just love these boards!

sahmof3, forgot to mention that I did live in PA for quite a while through high school, college, and my early working years. Philly area. Now live in CO. All my relatives are in PA still. Mom and dad in Philly area, extended family in State College area. Where are you from?

have your tried fenugreek pills? You should talk to your doctor about increasing your supply.

nitny... I'm from PA... Lancaster Co. My mom actually got her degree just a few years after you lol... she took online courses, though. She and I both got our college degrees in '96 (I wasn't at PSU).
