Tears & Hair Pulling - January 14

My seven week old doesn't sleep well. One hour periods durning the day and two hour periods at night are miracles, really. To top it off there's the crying and pulling off the br___t fits. That seems to be increasing. The baby also wants to be held all day and most of the night. I can't tell you how many times I've thought and said I wish I'd die. I'm not depressed, just worn out. Completely and utterly worn out. I hope things get better SOON, because I'm becoming extremely snappy with my others children. CIO isn't an option, I've never been able to do that, even when I want to. I love him so much, but he's killing me.

It'll get better with time. I never liked to hear my son cry either. Have you ever tried a Mayan Wrap? I'm not sure if you'd like it or not but my sister swears by hers. It allows you to hold him or her without strain on your back like a normal carrier. This way you can get other things done. Does the baby sleep in the car? Maybe go for drives with someone else so you and baby can both get a nap in and then go out for a quick bite to eat.

He did better than usual last night. He would wake up every couple hours, but that's better than it can be. He would also go back to sleep fast and without using me as a pacifer. I really needed that, I'm a bit recharged. I don't have a mayan wrap, but I've been wanting to get one. He will sleep in the car, but no longer than an hour. I wish he'd be like last night every night. I can handle that. Thanks so much for your help.

It sounds like he is overtired and he is using you to pacify himself. I was lucky that Ben would sleep at least 4 hours a night, but that was the most. He would not sleep much or at all during the day. I try not to let him stay up for more than 2 hours from waking. I may stick him in the crib afer about 1 to 1.5 hours and wait and see. More and more, he will fall asleep after fussing for 10 minutes. Sometimes he won't sleep, so I pick him up, rock/walk with him and shush/hum to him. If he settles down, I put him back in the crib and try again. He is definitely starting to get. Not always, but at least 50% more than before. Now that he is better rested, he is more willing to sleep, sleeps for longer stretches, and is generally nicer to be around.

You poor thing! My family had encouraged me to let my baby CIO before and I find that impossible. I also have a Mayan Wrap and it is a godsend for fussy babies who crave being held and/or nursed all day long.

I also agree the babywearing! My daughter doesn't like the sling so I have to use a snugli (yes its uncomfortable) but its better than a crying baby. My daughter is very high maint. especially the past couple of weeks. She is 4 1/2 months now. As for the crying and pulling off the b___st, I know that they have alot of info on stuff like that at It could be so many different things. Most likely it will pa__s-if it hasn't already, I see this post is from a few days ago.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to get something to carry him in, probably a mayan wrap, but I'll have to wait a couple weeks. The days are still rough, only sleeping for a half hour or less, unless in my arms. The last two nights have been better though, often sleeping a couple hours at a time. At one point last night he woke up and went back to sleep on his own, wouldn't even nurse. I'm still running on fumes, but it helps.

T&HP Is it possible your baby isn't getting enough to eat? Is he gaining weight ok?

T&HP - January 22

His weight gain is good. I think there are times when I don't have much milk, judging by no let down, no feeling of milk coming out and no real swallowing. It happens for anywhere from a single feeding to several hours. Most of the time he gags and chokes, gets plenty. I've started supplementing durning the periods when nothing much seems to be coming out. He'll drink 2-3oz of formula then. I hate doing it, but it helps both our stress levels. The most I've had to supplement is once a day. Ever since my first post things have improved durning the night (some days are still rough), he's waking every three hours at night. That's a huge improvement. Also, sometime after 7-9pm, he'll sleep decent without me, allowing me a break or time to eat or clean. Thanks so much for all the support. I can handle this, lol!

C - January 22

I'm glad it's gotten a little better. In a few months when he starts to sit up and crawl you'll miss him wanting to be held all the time. My son is just about 9 months and he's into everything. I'm actually starting to lose weight again from all the running around I do with him crawling.

christy - January 22

Could he have thrush? That would explain fussiness and pulling off the b___st.

Shawn - January 22

what is CIO?

T&HP - January 22

CIO, crying it out. :) He doesn't appear to have thrush, but I'll watch closely. Thanks. I love holding him, but it was at the point I couldn't eat, shower, do dishes or care for my other kids and stuff. I also co-sleep, he gets lots of cuddles day and night. Things do change a lot when they're into everything, lol. Thanks.
