Decaf Tea S

I tend to drink up to 5 cups of tea a day, usually green tea. We just found out today that I am pregnant. I have switched to decaf since trying to get pregnant but is it ok to drink that much tea even though it is decaf while I am pregnant.

I don't know

I also enjoy green tea, but read up on it and it's not advisable to drink much of it while pregnant, so I quit altogether. Just do a search o it. I certainly don't want to take any chances. But I don't know about regular decaf tea. Best wishes, Bree

Definitely ask your doctor. I was pretty much caffeine-free before I got pregnant - I was making an 8 cup pot of half reg, half decaf coffee every morning, then no more caffeine for the day. Before I knew I was pregnant, I only drank about half of the pot then didn't want any more. I asked my dr. on the first visit (6 wks) about caffeine, she said try to limit caffeine to the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee per day. At 12 wks now, I finally am starting to want decaf in the morning again. Because I love the taste and smell of coffee, regular or decaf!

I was curious about the Green Tea question and here's what I found - go to this link (or copy and paste): http://www.bloggingbaby.com/entry/1234000553036385/ I'm 4 months pregnant as well and what I do know is Folic Acid is extremely important, especially in the 1st trimester. Baby.com has helped me a lot!

My link apparently didn't work correctly so here's what it said: "Researchers isolated a compound called EGCG in green tea that increases the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Green tea has about five times more EGCG than other teas and decreases rates of certain cancers by inhibiting the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). Unfortunately this causes a significant drop in folic acid levels, the supplement pregnant women are given to prevent neural tube defects."
