First Trimester Screening

Hey Girls...I am 8 weeks pregnant and trying to decide whether or not I want to have the First Trimester Screening test. For those who do not know what this is it is a blood test and ultrasound done between 11-14 weeks I believe to see if the baby has an increased risk for Downs, Trisomy 18, and trisomy 21. They measure the fold of skin on the back of the babys neck. If the baby shows they do in fact have an increased risk then I would then have to decide whether or not I wanted further diagnostic testing to find out for sure, example: amniocentesis. I guess i am on the fance because I dont know if this is necessary. Do you know if I will have any other testing further along in my pregnancy that would test for these things? I am also worried because I heard false positives can happen with this test and then only to find out the baby is fine. What do you guys know about this test and what are your thoughts? Anyone have it done?

Hey Laur81. I know the blood test gives lots of false positives but I think the ultrasound is pretty accurate. Just make sure the person giving it to you is certified for nuchal transluency ultra sound. My perinatologist just informed me today that a lot of people (including him) are not certified. His partner will be doing mine on Dec. 19th. I will NEVER do an amino so if the results come back positive then I will just educated myself as much as possible before the baby is born. :) no sweat.

I've been thinking about this also, and I am going to have the ultrasound done, but even if there is something wrong it won't change my mind on whether to keep the baby or not. I believe God does everything for a reason and if he has blessed me with a child (retarded or not) I will love it just the same. Best of luck on the rest of your pregnancy.

I chose in my last pg and will chose in this pg not to have it done. There are too many false positives and I really don't want to worry myself over it.
