Had Early Ultrasound And Nervous

We have been trying for approx 7 months. Coming of BCP has made it take some time. I have had irregular periods sometimes not getting one for almost 2 months. My last period was Aug 28th 2005. I took a preg test last week (out of the blue) and it was positive. I call my doctor and they said since it had been 8 weeks since my LMP they would see me. My appt was yesterday. My doc said my uterus was firm, looked good and figured me to be approx 8 weeks along. Today I had my ultrasound. The only thing on the ultrasound was a sac. The tech said she figures me to be only about 5 weeks. I am figuring that I didn;t ovulate the right time that I ovulated later in my cycle. The doc thinks it may be a sign of an early miscarriage but is hopeful since my cycle is so screwy. I am having HCG levels drawn this week to confirm everything is a go. I am so nervous this is my first pregnancy and I am afraid I will miscarriage. Any one have any advice?

Hi Kelly - October 18

You story sounds almost exactly like mine except they saw nothing in my uterus. Said my uterus looked about 8wks but that could be it never went down after 1st pregnancy. I didn't test positive until October 7th so they are saying it was probably just too early to see anything. I feel like I am further along but my HCG levels seem closer to 2 to 4 weeks. Let me know what your HCG levels determine!

Hi - my dates are the same as yours - last period started Aug. 28 and I had been off the pill for about 4 cycles, but with consistent 28-29 day cycles. I had a scan yesterday and embryo was there but only measuring 4.5mm, consistent with about 5 weeks and with no heartbeat. They said it's possible my dates were off but I'm pretty darned sure they're not, and I had my first positive HPT three weeks ago. I'm also getting HCG done this week but I've pretty much given up hope as my b___bs lost their tenderness exactly at the end of week 5 and I've been concerned ever since. Hope your story has a happy ending - I am now hoping to miscarry naturally over the next few days or I will schedule a D&C for next week (unless the HCG test produces some miracle!). I want to try again asap! good luck.

Hi Emma - October 19

I am a little confused because my u/s was consistent with 5 weeks and there was an empty sac. I did some research and that is what is supposed to be there at 5 weeks. All that I have read states that it is too early to do the u/s to track the heart beat. Keep your chin up maybe your HCG will be okay and it's just to early to detect. Did your doc say you would miscarry? My b___bs still hurt but I still won't feel better till I have my hcg done.

Hi girls, Emma, please don't be in a hurry to do the D&C. I am 6 weeks pregnant, and have had 2 previous m/c. I've done a lot of research on this and the u/s picks up the hb at different times during the 1st 5-8 weeks. I have had 2 u/s so far, the first showed my uterus to be empty so dr suggested an ectopic pregnancy. The second showed the yolk sac and the very beginnings of a 'flicker'. just barely a h/b --your baby may be a late bloomer or you truly could be just 5 weeks in which case you may not see a h/b for another 2 weeks. Give your baby time and it would not be the first time a dr. jumps to conclusions and does a D&C to early before they are positive there isn't a viable fetus. I will pray that all goes good for you. But just stay in control of your pregnancy.

thanks for the support...the ultrasound doctor said I should come back for another scan in a week as he really couldn't say for certain I was going to miscarry. My regular doctor advised having my HCG measured, so I had the first today and will go back Friday. Just this afternoon I've had the closest think I've had to spotting - sort of yellowish pink, no cramping yet. If I have to miscarry, I think I'd rather have a D&C but it looks like nature may take its course before I get my HCG results Monday. I have been researching embryo sizes all day and agree that it's better to wait than to D&C too soon, just in case...

My doctor just called and my hcg is 5434. early u/s est. me @ 5 weeks. I have to have my hcg re drawn tomorrow. Any thoughts from anyone?

Cindy - October 19

I had my first u/s today at 8 wks (tomorrow will be 9 wks). U/S tech only saw an empty sac. She said that it should be reabsorped by my body in the next few weeks. I still have all the pregnancy symptoms and I have not had any spotting/cramping at all. My hcg levels were at 11,000 at 2 weeks ago. I haven't had them checked again yet, as I'm waiting to hear from my doc once she gets the u/s results. I'm really nervous that I have miscarried. Any advice out there?

Hi Cindy Are you sure you are 8 weeks. They did an ultrasound on me thinking I was and found an empty sac. the doc said I could be in early mc. However, I have not been ovulating regularly. The u/s read at approx 5 weeks gestation. My hcg was 5434 and I have to redraw it tomorrow. Maybe you just arent that far along?

Cindy - October 19

Hi Kelly. I had my IUD removed on August 18. I got my period that day and haven't had one since. Its totally possible that I am not quite as far a long..isn't there like a 2 week "guess" time? The u/s tech was so matter of fact and difinitive about it. I also have a very tilted uterus so I don't know if that makes a difference or not. I had my blood drawn 3 times before they would schedule the u/s...to make sure the hcg levels were increasing properly. When the dr called to say that I could schedule the u/s she said my levels were perfect. I'm just confused. How can you have all the symptoms and have no baby? Is it possible that they just can't see it yet?

Kelly - October 19

Cindy, did they rule out an ectopic?

Cindy - October 19

Yes. There is the gestational sac in my uterus but it is empty. No yolk sac or fetus. When I took my home pregnancy test on Sept. 18th it was a very faint positive. I repeated it 2 days later and it was much stronger. I am hoping that means that I am not 8 weeks but maybe only 6 or 7. I guess I might be grasping at straws but it is so disappointing not to see anything.

Cindy, I know but just have faith. I was soooo worried with what they told me yesterday with my u/s but since my levels are ok I can just hope and pray. We just all have to realize that it is out of out hands! Good luck!

Cindy - October 19

Kelly, Thank you for your support. I hope everything turns out okay for you as well. Let me know how your levels turn out this week.

Cindy, if you have a tilted uteris, is is very common to see the empty sack until much later in pregnancy. The tilt makes it hard to see anything, and the sack itself appeared smaller than it really is. Besides, you really shoudl not rely on your date of last period, since you definitely had an abnormal one, right after the removal of IUD. So, there is a big chance you are actually fine. Speaking of myself, my last pregnancy ended in miscarriage, also kept seeing an empty sack week after week, and finally I had a D/C. But my uteris is not tilted, and I eventually realised that I am grasping at straws. The a___lysis of products of conception showed that I was indeed having a bad pregnancy. Good luck to you, I am sure you will be fine.
