Spotting Need Advice

J.J. - November 27

Hi. I could use the advice of someone ahead of me in their pregnancy. In July '05 I found out I was pregnant, quite a surprise! I was 37 at the time. I have two children, 7 and 5. I went in for my first prenatal appt. at just over 8 weeks. They couldn't find the heartbeat and the fetus was measuring about 6 weeks. To make a long story short, I had a missed abortion type of miscarriage (The fetus had died, but my body did not miscarriage - no spotting, nothing). I took medication the next week to make my uterus contract. The doctor said I should wait at least one cycle and try again, if we wanted. We did, and I got pregnant right away! Today I am 6 weeks 5 days. At 5 weeks 3 days I started spotting and it didn't stop (no cramping). The OBGYN nurse did an ultrasound at 6 weeks 1 day. I was measuring the right size. We saw the heartbeat! She told me the blood was old and to watch out for cramps or heavy bleeding. They started me on Prometrium 100mg 2x/day. (They didn't check to see if my progesterone was low, but said this was a safe precaution.) My Hcg was 33,700 on 6w1d and 42,400 on 6wk 3day. 1st question - Is that good? It went up, but is that enough? I am still spotting (10 days). Seems like every four days it gets slightly heavier, and always in the middle of night or when I wake up(a lot while wiping - never really makes it to my panties)then it slows down again. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know of one? Did it end good or bad? Thanks, JJ edd 7/17/06

Hi J.J. I've read that as long as it isn't bright pink or red, your spotting is safe. Also, if you've seen the baby's heart beat at week 7 or 8, the chance of miscarriage is drastically reduced to only a 3-5% chance of m/c. Good luck and make sure to get plenty of rest.

I agree with Kennedy. Seeing the heartbeat is a great sign. I guess the question I would ask the dr is if it is a concern that your HCG did not double in 48 hours. I am not sure how long it is supposed to continue doubling every 48 hours. Good luck.

Thanks for your answers so far. I have another ultrasound on 12/6.

Hi J.J. don't worry about your HCG levels as once they're over a certain amount, I think it was 12000, then it can take 72 to 96 hours to double. I spotted from the day my period was due till 9w. As long as it isn't copious amounts of red don't worry. Congrats!! I'm now 12w.
