They are irregular tightenings of the uterus. Most women get them during the second half of their pregnancy...It can be triggered by you or the baby moving...and can last anywhere form 30 sec to 2 min. during the braxton hicks contractions, the whole uterus becomes really hard. But they wont get closer together or last for a longer period of time like real labor. Hope this helps, I needed to look it up anyways =p From what i read though and what my Dr. has told me...Its completely normal. =)

Yes they are tightenings of the uterus, lets say though that they are not supposed to be painful, just so you know...I have been getting them for a while now and I'm only going into 19 weeks...this is my 3rd pregnancy should talk to your midwife or doc about them...I didnt know anything about them the first time either until my doc explained to me what they were...good luck ladies

Practice contractions. They prepare the body for delivery. I got them from 19 weeks on and delivered a healthy girl 5 days before my due date.

I suggest you get the book what to expect when you are expecting! wonderful book! It answered all of my questions with my first baby and calmed my nerves when i thought something may be wrong. There is a whole section about Braxton Hicks also. I'm sure anyone on this site will be glad to answer any questions you have, I know i will.
