Can Eating Too Many Sweet Things Bring On Diabetes

I have been eating lots of chocolate and biscuits (I'm trying to cut down!). I'm worried that I may be increasing my chances of getting gestational diabetes and I've heard that this produces big babies. Does anyone else know anything about this?

Nothing like that has been proven, in fact, nobody knows what causes gestational diabetes for sure; what we do know is that it happens hormonal activity from the placenta, the same one that helps the baby develop, blocks the mother's insulin action in the body, causing insulin resistance. This condition in turn makes it difficult for the mother to use insulin and she may need up to 3 times more when pregnant. Without insulin glucose builds up in the blood, since it cannot convert in to energy and it causes hyperglycemia .....sorry for the lengthy explanation, but generally peaking it's a good idea to have a good diet and some excercise routine. If you are in a high risk group for gestational diabetes, it would not be bad to use common sense in your sugar intake. There are no established ways to prevent GD though
