Can Someone Explain The Sugar Pills

I am 18 and I just started birth control for extremely irregular periods. My doctor didn't feel the need to give much explaination on the s_xual side when prescribing the pill; she only said that during sugar pills I will have my period. I've practiced protected s_x with my boyfriend in the past, but this is a aggitating task considering I am allergic to latex and must take extra precautions. Is there a risk for pregnancy during the sugar pills? Do I still need to use a condom? Someone please help explain between the lines...

The sugar pills are just to keep you in the routine of taking the pill. I never used to take them, I'd throw the card out when I got to the sugars and knew to start a new card the following week. There is no hormones in the sugar pills and so do not affect anything. As long as you take the pill the same time everyday, have been on it for AT LEAST a fortnight it is safe enough to be used as a contraception on it's own. I would wait for a whole cycle first though to be sure and remember that they say it is 99.8% effective. Also that it doesn't protect you from STD's, sorry, just had to throw that in. Oh and if you miss 3 pills in a row, you'll get a period AS WELL as at the end of the cycle. Take care

what kaz said is right. the sugar pills are exactly that, sugar. they do not contain any hormones at all. It's like a placebo. I personally skip my sugar pills just to give me a break from taking it everyday, but I only suggest this if you can remember to start your next pack on time. The pirpose of the is you stop the hormone pills then your period comes, but you keep taking the pills just to keep in the habit of doing so.
