Diet Drinks When Pregnant

I was just reading that diet drinks may cause birth defects during pregnancy because of aspartame. Does anyone know anything about this. I just got off the internet looking at some info on the subject and now I'm scared!

I want to know the same thing too. I crave soda sometimes but dont want all the sugar so I will have a can maybe once a week. I did read a story on the internet that a mom drank around 4 a day and her son was born with a lot of problems.. due to aparatame.

I've been wondering about aspartame too. What else is it in besides soda?

monica - May 5

looks like anything that is sugar-free has asparatame. Sugar free gum has it.

I didn't think about that....are we not supposed to have it or what? Looks like when you go to the doctor, they would have a paper that they give you that tells you all the things you are not suppose to do or eat. My doc's never have told me anything. Not to stay away from caffeine or anything. They didn't even ask me if i smoked.

my doctor never said anything about asparatmae either but I keep hearing how bad it is to you and it can become addicting. If its not good for a normal adult it cant be good for your baby. I think if you have one once in a while there should not be a problem.

I agree, but almost all gum has it in it and I'm trying to quit smoking.....anyway. How far along are you? Do you know if it's a boy or girl yet?

The risk comes because asparatame is made of two proteins, one of them being phenylalanine. If the mother has a rare condition known as phenylketonuria (inability to metabolize phenylalanine properly) then damage to the fetus is possible. More studies are needed, but one diet cola a day should be the max. Also under no circ_mstances should you use saccharin based foods while pregnant.

how do you know if you have phenylkelonuria?

My doc said regular soda and diet soda is safe, in moderation. All my friends drank tons of diet soda when they were pregnant and all their kids were just fine. They also smoked, which isnt' good, but they are very healthy kids.

Sissy, PKU screening is routine at birth, at least in the US. 1 in 14,000 newborns in the US have PKU. It affects all ethnic groups but its most common is in Northern Europeans, and Native Americans. Not as common in African Americans, Asians Southern Europeans, or Hispanics. Newborns are screened for it, and treated if it's found. If PKU is treated early, there ususally is no brain damage....... By the way this is why you hear people say that diet sodas cause brain damage etc. Not true, unless someone consumes over 60 cans of it a day. Bottom line is, if you have it, have it in moderation.

The more I think about it, is ANYTHING really good for you? lol...seems like everyday you hear something on the news about something that was once thought not to be harmful and now it is. I did end up asking doc if it was ok to quit smoking cold turkey and he said it was, but if I couldn't to smoke no more than 5 a day. I don't smoke any at night or on weekends. Trying to stop completley.

Correction: In my first post it should read: If the BABY has a rare condition known as phenylketonuria (inability to metabolize phenylalanine properly). Not the mother... sorry for the confusion....

Asprtame is on a lot of some like flinstone vit, gum, mints, linstene strips, and etc. I would say for you to really read labels!
