Genetic Counseling

Has anyone had genetic counseling? Did you get good news? Were they able to give you clear results of the risk for your potential children? We have an appointment because of history of learning disabilities (?syndorme) in the family. I'm quite nervous!

Hi, Lala, we did have genetic counseling because of my age (I'm 35). We don't have any history of birth defects in our families, but I did have a slightly increased risk of Down syndrome or Trisomy 13 or 18 because of my age. We did the first trimester screen (blood test and ultrasound) and due to the results, my risks dropped dramatically - from 1 in 270 to 1 in 635 for Downs, and from 1 in 400 to 1 in 9341 for Trisomy 13 or 18. From what I understand, this screening is more accurate than the second trimester quad screen, and it identifies an increased risk in 80% of Downs babies and 90% of babies with Trisomy 13 or 18. Good luck!

Hi Lala - I had genetic counseling primarily due to my age of 38. We have no risks in the family whatsoever. I had the Nuchal Translucency test done around 13 weeks (perfectly normal results), then the 20 week Level II ultrasound and genetic counseling at the same time. I have a 99.9% chance of having a healthy and perfect baby, and due to that, the doctor could not morally or ethically recommend an amnio, as that brings its own risks. I think my odds of having a baby with DS were 1 in 1,576, or way off the charts (into the 20-something year old range). In any event, I'm glad I had it done. Please don't be nervous! I wish you all the best!

I had it because I wanted that ultrasound at 13 I mean, I knew that no matter what the outcome, we would keep the baby. But it was nice to hear that baby is perfectly healthy, and it was great to see her bouncing around in there...

Hi I had genetic counseling due to my age I am 35 and I also had a level 2 sono on the same day I was nervous as well but she was very nice and just asked us some basic family questions to see what our risks were and then said that based on what we had told her my chances of having a healthy baby were 97% and then we had the level 2 sono which they checked for everything and found no soft markers at all to indicate problems and then just to be sure i had another level 2 4wks later that showed a prefectly healthy baby so now I am not worried about anything being wrong but I did find the counseling very imformative she explained the types of problems that they would check for due to my age ect...good luck to you

Thanks everyone for responding! You all are encouraging. My situation seems a little different, though. I'm young (less than 30) and not yet pregnant. I have family issues so we're having genetic counseling to determine whether we should have biological children or not. I'm very anxious and scared and nervous about what they'll tell us!
