It is a pelvic exam.

They usually do them the last three or four weeks before your due date. My doctor just felt for my cervix with a gloved hand...no speculum was used, so it wasn't uncomfortable.

i dont wanna scare ya and i think they are alot slacker here in aus but the only time i had one was when i was in labour to see how low i guess and where the baby was at, this was a female rough as guts doctor and i screamed, i had a couple when i was in labour, if u have them prior i am sure they wont be like that as i have had them in the past and after pregnancy and they were no way anything like i experienced, as i have said b4, make sure u tell the dr not to be as rough as guts basically when ur in labour as u have the right to not have someone handle u in that way.

Yeah, they hurt when you have them during labor, they do these exams so they can see how everythings "coming" so to speak! They are not painful when you have one at your doctors office though, I had one at 34 weeks to see if I was dilated any and I didn't hardly feel it. I also had the GBS test done at this time and it was not uncomfortable like people had said it was going to be.
