I saw a whole string that had been added and added to, over the course of the last 2 yrs on pregnancy while using the IUD. I thought I'd just briefly share my experience.
I have twins and have had the MIRENA IUD since my 6 wk checkup after they were born in 2002. It has worked well.
The MIRENA IUD is a 5 yr product. I've had mine for just over 5 yrs.
I think I could tell when the medicine started wearing off because my periods started getting longer.
Anyhow, the 1st day of my last period started Aug 28th and was 2 wks long. I haven't had a period since then...
I had to take one of my twins to the Dr the other day, and while I was there I asked if the IUD had to be changed since it'd been more than 5 yrs. The Dr told me that it was still effective, but just that the progesterone (sp?) had worn off by now.
I have taken 2 HPT's that both say negative. Surely if I was pregnant there weould be enough homone to show up by now... so I guess the Dr. is right!
Even after 5 yrs, the MIRENA IUD is still working, even tho my period seems to be MIA.
So, I guess what I'm saying is, don't jump to conclusions. It's easy to get worked up either way (whether you are trying to have children or trying to avoid having children)
Typically the IUD is pretty reliable. If in doubt, it's best to go see your Dr and get checked out.
And for those wondering: I couldn't find ANYTHING online (even on the MIRENA website) regarding this particular IUD and what happens after you've had it for 5 yrs. Their web site doesn't address that concern. Which is wy i decided to ask the Dr, even though it wsn't our regular GP.
Thank GOD for Dr's.! :)
