Maddie - May 1

Has anyone had experience, or know anyone who has experienced losing a child by Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Freaks me slap out. I never hear of it happening now a days, but what in the world is it caused by and has anyone had it happen to them?

Hi Maddie, I've never had it happen to me, (thank the Lord) but I do know people who have been less fortunate. The cause of SIDS is unfortunately unknown. The only answer the medical field has is that there are things that you can do to lessen or prevent the chances of it ever happening to you. A few examples would include ALWAYS putting baby on his/her back to sleep, keeping heavy blankets, stuffed animals and according to some experts even bumper-pads out of the crib. There are also things you can do before the baby is born, like DON'T SMOKE! There are a lot of great resources on the web. Just google SIDS and you will get more info than you have time to read it! Good luck with you new addition!

Sids still happen. One common theory is that mother's who have smoked during their pregnancy have a higher risk of giving low birth weight children and a higher risk of SIDS. I dont think they really can pin point exactly why thou. Try to relax, the thought worries me too though.
