I have heard that it is due to the water softening you up some. I think that it can go either way. My girlfriend had both of her children via waterbirth and she swears by it. I really did not have any problems at the hospital and am trying to decide if i am going to have a water birth when I get pregnant soon or in the bed.

Don't know and never will first hand, but there are women who swear by it. It's supposed to be a lot less painful and less shocking to the baby, though the latter is dismissed as pseudoscience by some. Most articles I read on it, find that even if available, it's hard to find midwives or doctors who are properly trained on it, as some of the procedures are different.
