When do you take your lo to the dentist for the 1st time, and do you go to a special dentist for you lo's? My son has 11 teeth, should I take him? He'll be 1 in 2 weeks

My dentist told me that unless there is a problem, 3 yrs is usually when you should start regular check-ups, same for eye exams. Until that time they have difficulty staying focused, seated and listening to directives like "open your mouth" etc...

I took my ds in a little bit before he turned one (he had four teeth.. still has four teeth..lol) just to make sure his teeth were healthy and so the dentist could show me how to clean his teeth and gums properly. 3 yrs is when he told me when to start regular check-ups. (the dentist is also a family friend.. so it didn't cost anything.. otherwise I would've waited till he was at least 2.. lol)

My dad is our dentist and he started peeking around in my daughters mouth at his office when she was just shy of 2.

My dad is our dentist, too, Nerdy Girl, so we got free "checks" all along! 3 is the norm. My daughter will have her first "official" check up in February.

As a dental hygienist, we reccomend 3 unless youi suspect a problem. There are paedodontists (children's dentsits) but generally you are referred to see them by a regular DDS. Good luck!

This is such a problem for us as my son will not have it! He doesn't handle new situations well and is terrified (for some reason) at the thought of the dentist. He is 4.5 years old and he still hasn't been but we do brush his teeth twice a day. Any ideas on how to calm his fears?

My dd went right after she turned 1 (she had a mouth full of teeth) the dentis put fluoride on them and showed us how to clean them. Her next appt is in Feb so I guess she will be getting the usual every 6 mths checkup
