Asthma

Okay, my ds is 4 months old. He has had cold symtoms for 3 weeks. My ped believed it to be RSV but only a moderated case so far. On Monday, ds turned blue during a coughing fit, which only occurs when waking, so I rushed him off the the e.r. (he had just been at the peds office Mon. morning) All of his testing came back neg. for RSV, influenza, etc...both chest x-rays were clear yada yada.....He was put on a nebulizer at the peds office and the hos said to do teh same thing. I had a follow up appt. w/ my ped. the next morning. she said that the RSV swab is not always accurate and that we shouldn't rely on it. she still believes he has RSV, as do I. However, she mentioned that it was too early to start worrying about asthma. YIKES! Do any of you have lo's with asthma? Is there such thing as childhood asthma? Any info would be great!

I have two children with asthma. My oldest son was dx'ed at age 12, but my now 4 yo son was dx'ed at around 8 months. He had his first bout of problems at around 4 months...it was not RSV however. By the time he was 8 months old he had been ill 4 different times that required he take meds by the nebulizer. The son that was dx'ed at 8 months seems to be outgrowing it...each year his problems get less and less. I have read that it is very common for them to outgrow it when dx'ed in infancy. My older son that was dx'ed at 12 is a different story. Everytime he gets a respiratory illness he begins wheezing. My youngest dd who is now 12 had RSV when she was 2 months old and was really bad off....in ICU and had to have her lungs catheterized. They told me that in all likelihood she would have asthma, but she doesn't. I wouldn't really worry about it alot at this point. If his symptoms continue for longer than another couple of weeks or he seems to get sick alot and have these same problems in the future I would ask the dr. about asthma.

My 13 month old ds has asthma.. And I have asthma (I was finally diagnosed with it when I was 2 y.o. after being hospitalized 4 times).. Just make an appointment with an allergy/asthma specialist and they can diagnose your ds' problem (if it is asthma) better than his ped.

Thanks so much girls. He is only 4 months old so I am not jumping to anything just yet. I will however keep these suggestions to my attention! Thanks!

HI, I've had asthma since birth. I was in and out of hospital all the time when i was little as i had a very very chronic case, my medication helped lots though! When i got older the symptoms lessened and when i was 16 i stopped taking all of my medication. The only time i need any now is if i have a bad cold or case of the flu as my tubes and lungsget blocked. I wouldn't worry if your lo has it as it is very easy to treat and almost always either lessens or disappears as they grow older.

Aw that's not so good connorsmommy! It's really horrible when you get a bad attack. When mine flares up its REALLY bad and i'm on a nebuliser for a good couple of weeks but that rarely happens now, maybe once a year IF that. Have you asked to be switched medication? I went through a few before i found some that worked really well! One day i thought, i've been on this since birth i'm probably immune to it now so stopped taking it all (i do not recommended that to anyone btw, just in case someone tries and i get in trouble) and luckily for me i didn't notice that much of a difference! I started swimming more and that increased my lung strength and capacity a HUGE amount!! Hope it gets better for you soon connorsmommy!! xx
