Cereal Question Is My Baby Eating To Much

My baby will be 6 weeks old on Tuesday and he weighs 11 lbs 13 ozs and is 23 3/4 inches. He is eating 8 ozs every 3-4 hours! From what it sounds like and compared to your babies, mine's a little piggy! Is it to early to introduce a little cereal? He sleeps through the night already (actually he did the day he came home from the hospital and ever since~it's rare that he gets up in the night). I've heard to introduce cereal to help babies sleep through the night but since I'm not having that problem, can I introduce it just to satisfy him better? Help!

He sounds a little young to introduce cereal, his stomach is still developing. My baby was heavy, too, and ate what seemed like all the time, but since she was b___stfed, I'm not sure how many ounces that was. Has he been in for the 6 week check-up? (And congratulations on him sleeping through the night!)

Amanda, based on my experience (my son had a reflux issue so we had a lot of visits to the GI specialist) I would recommend you NOT feed cereal at 6 weeks. Firstly, it will add a lot mroe calories which he is obviously not needing, lol. Secondly, it can really upset a tummy at that age. They just generally are not ready that soon. My son was like yours and he still is a major piggy. You may find that he will be ready for cereal a little eralier than most. Things to look out for....when he can sit supported but with good head control, when he is eating 32 ounces and still very hungry, and when he shows an interest in everyone else eating. Mason was started at 3 1/2 months. Starting them early brings on a mjor risk of allergy too so you have to be careful. In the meantime, if he is hungry, feed him and don't worry. If he takes in more than 32 ounces, that will okay until he is ready for solids. Don't give cereal in the bottle. That is only supposed to be used for reflux issues or swallowing issues. Grats on your little piggy! My son is now 4 months old and in 9 month old clothes already, lol.

My doctor said you should start cereal at 3 - 4 months...congrats on your baby sleeping through the night - I'm jealous!

I don't think he's eating too much since he isn't eating at night. Remember alot of these ladies are feeding at night as well. I would not start cereal now your son is too young. The only time you should give cereal before 4 months is with your peds recommendation.

Dont introduce cereal to satisfy him - it wont satisfy him better then formula because it has less calories and he is to young - if what you are doing is working why change it? I agree with pbj, he is eating more during the day because he isnt eating at night...my 9 week old eats less then your baby during the day but she is up every 2 hours at night to eat also, it evens out!
