Don T Agree With Dr Give Antibiotics Or Not

I read a few months back that more dr's were beginning to take a wait and see stance on antibiotics when it comes to ear infections because of both antibiotic resistance and the fact that 80% of ear infections will clear up on their own within 24-48 hours. Some babies won't be symptomatic (or appear to be) with an ear infection. Our pedi had told us that our now 8-yo son had a really high pain tolerance.....he used to get alot of ear infections and never made a peep about it so I believe it. In this case, giving him antibiotics ONE time even if he doesn't have an ear infection probably won't do any major damage (antibiotic resistance, etc), but in the future I would just explain to the dr. that I didn't really want to give him the antibiotics unless he knew for 100% that he had an ear infection (btw, our pedi has me help hold lo's head so he can look....baby gets mad sometimes, but it's necessary). As flower.momma said, taking antibiotics can upset the bodies natural balance so you may want to give an acidopholus supplement with the antibiotics and after they are done.
