Feeding Too Often

My DD is 12 weeks old and I feed her expressed br___t milk. We usually feed her 4 oz every 2-3 hours (more like every 2). My DH thinks that she needs to go longer btw feedings and thats why she wakes up every 3 hours at night to feed.

Breast fed babies do well with more frequent feedings. A 12 week old baby is waking up because they are truely hungry. I think they say a baby can go 6 straight hours through the night once they are over 10 lbs but again every baby is different. You might want to try giving her a few more ounces or cluster feeding her at night and or slip in a dream feed before you go to bed. She will sleep through when she is ready in my opinion.

Actually- I think the opposite is true- The more you feed her during the day the more likely she may be able to go longer at night. every 2-3 hours is not bad at all- My lo (b___stfed) at 3.5 months- still wants to eat every 1.5-3 hours most of the time during the day (except when she takes her long afternoon nap) and mostly its every1.5 hours. She slept a 4-6 hour stretch of time at night from birth- but every baby is different. Babies don't feed according to the clock- ESPECIALLY b___st fed babies. Feed your lo when she is hungry. Like Gretta said you might also try to cluster feed inthe evenings- feed ever 1-1.5 or 2 hours before bed to bulk her up.

My son eats more than that and he is 4 weeks old. She is probably going through a growth spurt and needs the milk, like the two posters above me said.

MIMI....I'm going through the same thing with our ds. He's eating 4-5 ounces of formula every 3 hours during the day (sometimes a little longer) and he has just in the last 2 weeks started going 4 hours at night. I don't know what to do to get him to sleep longer either. Sometimes I wonder if it's habit that's waking him up. Somewhere I read it said that if they are only eating a couple of ounces at night feeds then it's habit. If they eat more then they are hungry. I started reswaddling and giving Z his paci and he'll sleep longer before he's actually up to eat. If you guys figure anything out please tell me :) Oh yeah, thanks for the advice on the mylicon thing!

That's perfectly normal to me...My dd (bf) was the same way until she started solids at 4.5 months...then she started to go longer between feedings, although at 6 weeks she slept through the night, but she always nursed every 2-3 hours all day long til bedtime. It will change soon enough!

My LO feeds every 2 to 2.5 hours during the day, so I think that is normal for b___stfed babies. He was doing the same during the night (sometimes going up to 3 hours) until I re-discovered swaddling. I make sure he is good and swaddled before I put him down for the night and he sleeps for 4 to 4.5 hour stretches. Its been awesome getting that extra hour or two of sleep. I think the swaddling keeps him in such a deep sleep that he can go that extra time until he is starving. Mimi, weren't you going to buy the Miracle blanket? Thats a type of swaddler, right? I would say try that to see if it works....GL!
