How Does CIO Work

I am desperate. I bf my son and lately all he wants to to is stay latched on all night. This has been going on for a few weeks now and I need to get some sleep. He is 9.5 months old and has never slept thru the night. Can anyone tell me how CIO worked for them? Once they fall asleep do they end up sleeping thru the night? How many nights did it take? If they wake during the night do you let them cry again? I have tried a few times to let him cry for 10-20 minutes and then calm him down. However, the minute I go in he cries harder so I pick him up. He is good til I try to lay him down again. There is no sign of tiring in his cry. Please help, I need some advice!!

Well I finally had to do CIO for my son. I would make sure he was fed, clean diaper and had nothing around him where he could throw or harm himself. I would lay him down and he would immediately start screaming. After 5 minutes I would go in and lay him back down if he was standing, cover him up and walk out. I did not pick him up or walk around with him. The next time I would wait 10 minutes and do the same thing. I would just keep increasing the time increments by 5 minutes and he would usually cry for like and 1 the first few nights then it slowly decreased in time. Now I can tell him it's time to go nite nite and I will lay him down in his bed, he doesn't make a noise not even a whine and he will just roll over and go to sleep. I waited until he was a year old and it was too long. I wish I would have done this much sooner. He usually wouldn't sleep through the night after CIO but I would just let him cry and he would only cry like 10 minutes in the night. CIO is tough, it killed me to hear my son screaming, but I had to tell myself that he was fine and he was just seeing how long it would take for me to come and get him. Now he knows that crying wll not get him out of his bed and he is the best little sleeper ever. Also try to give him a bath before you lay them down and try to lay them down around the same time everynight. My son sleeps from about 8:30-7:30 straight. Good luck!!

That is my biggest problem....his crying just tears my heart out. I keep trying to think that it will be a benefit to both of us in the end, but, I am just too much of a softy. I worry to much!! Also, he has slept with me since day one and when I do get him sleeping in his own bed, I lay there awake listening to make sure he is still breathing!!

I was the exact same way and I hated to hear him cry. But once he hit a year old and he would only sleep if he was in bed with me and I wasn't getting any sleep at all I just could not take it anymore. Also at 9.5 months they are old enough to sleep thru the night without worry. They can lift their head, roll over, most can stand even. I think that your lo would be fine doing CIO, like I said just make sure they have nothing they can harm themselves with and he will be fine. It is hard that is why it took me a year to do it but it is sooo worth it now.
