Is This A Normal Baby Noise

Hi guys - My baby is 2.5 weeks old and lately he sounds like he is constantly clearing his throat. He will even do it in his sleep and wake himself up. I even hear him do it in the middle of the night. He gets a little fussy when he is doing it. I have never been around infants, I know they gurgle and make a lot of noises, but is this a normal noise? I almost feel like he is choking....

was he born a little early? sometimes the respiratory system can be immature even in full term babies. I would say don't worry about it, but you might want to make a quick call to the dr. Maybe do a google search on "signs of respiratory distress in newborns"

Thanks KH - ya, he was 2 weeks early. I am almost sure he just has to work some mucous out of his system, but it makes me a little uneasy. I am doing a search now...

Sounds like reflux. Try keeping him in an upright position for 30 minutes following a feeding.

That sounds just like my daughter, she is almost 3 weeks old, and she makes the same noises. I was induced at 37 weeks due to high blood pressure so she was 3 week early..if this is reflux, is it dangerous? should i be concerned or will this just go away by itself in time?

If you suspect he's having mucus talk to your pediatrician. Ours suggested we use saline drops to help her clear it, but it went away before I tried it. Otherwise, quite normal. My daughter did it too around this time. She also makes a loud noise when she stretches and she strethes a lot! Babies can be quite noisy even they sleep.

Thanks guys... We were up all night again... Listening to him "choking". I am almost positive I am being over-dramatic, but just finished a round of antibiotics for bronchitis and am a little nervous (thrush perhaps??). We are heading to the pediatrician at 2pm today. We'll let you know if it turns out to be anything.
