Little Lump Hmmmm

Hey guys...This morning I found a small lump at the back of my 15 month old sons neck. It is pea sized and right at the base of his hailine. Everything points to an enlarged lymph node, at least from what I read today, but I am half out of my mind with worry. I will go to doc tomorrow, but has anyone else have experience with this?

Alot of times their lymph nodes will enlarge if they have a cold, and ear infection, or even a scratch on the skin. Also, some kids just have large lymph nodes. When my 8-year-old was about a year old I was changing his diaper and noticed one of the lymph nodes in his groin area was enlarged. He had a bit of a rash, but I'd never seen one do that so I took him to the dr. His pedi said that he was like his older brother and had large lymph nodes anyways, but it was enlarged from the rash, too. He said that was totally normal that it was the bodies way of trying to fight any infection that may occur. As far as my older son having large nodes, I checked and the dr. was right, he did have large lymph nodes, as does my now it seems to be a trait that my boys have. Doctors always check their nodes at appointments so your dr. will know if it's norm for him. Also, as I said they will get enlarged nodes if they are getting any kind of infection, too. Generally, the nodes that enlarge are the ones closest to the infection, so it could be a possible ear infection coming on.

I noticed a pea sized lump on my dd neck right behind her ear when she was around 6 months (she is 10 months now). I was also alarmed but when I mentioned it to my pediatrician and one other doctor in the network, they did not even raise an eyebrow. Like Rabbits said, often times it happens bc of an infection in the area....good idea to get it checked out anyway.

Desiree, I'm so glad you asked this question. I found one too when my son was around 5 months. I showed my Dr. at 6 months and he said it was nothing to worry about. Of course being a first time, worry wart of a mother, I still check each day to see if it is there and it is there. Last week, I had my yearly physical and even asked my Dr. to feel it. She said it is nothing to worry about and it's pea size too. My son's Dr. also said that there are a number of factors that can cause lymph nodes to swell. My son has his 9 month appt. next week and I'm going to ask about it one last time (I know, I know, I'm a freak).

Thank you for sharing...I went to the doc today, and he said that the lump was indeed lymph nodes. Whewww! He is very allergic to mosquito bites, and likely the nodes activated because of that. I am supposed to watch and make sure it dosen't get bigger, but it is already shrinking. What a scare!!

desiree, our little loved ones sure can give us a scare sometimes, can't they? I'm glad to hear that everything is okay.
