I found out a couple of days ago that my neighbor's son who is 9 months old got bacterial meningitis. She had written on her window of her car "Pray for baby Memphis" I knew something was wrong. Come to find out he was taken to the ER and was sent home with doctor's telling her (Memphis's mom) that he was OK he was just sick with a cold and sent him home. Well, his fever never broke and she took him to Children's Medical Center and he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis! He is such a sick little boy and is on life support. Last week they had to take both his hands and both his feet!! Poor little angel.... my heart just breaks writting this. I have a 3 1/2 month old son and couldn't imagine this happening. We should all count our blessings and not worry about silly things. When I was feeding my son tonight I just cried b/c of how lucky we are to have him. Just wanted to share this story b/c it's been on my mind alot and b/c we are all so lucky to have happy, heathly babies.

That is awful. I feel for her so much. My thoughts and prayers are with them. I don't even want to try to imagine what that poor family is going through.

That poor little guy. :o( I hope that he gets better soon. I feel so bad for his parents. *Cry*

I got choked up just reading that. You are so right... I need to stop worrying about things and really count my blessings for the healthy baby I have. Poor little baby. Someday he'll have those hands and feet back, but I know that is not much consolation now. I'll pray that the have strength to get through this!

I will say a prayer for her baby and for the family. It is heart wrenching to hear about that happening to someones precious child. What does not break them will make them stronger. I hope that their child makes it through this and that the family's suffering be eased. That poor, poor baby.

o my god that is the most heartbreaking thing that i have ever heard. I had a baby die down the road from my house a few weeks ago and i just help my daughter for hours after i heard the news. It just made me so thankful for what i have. I wish that there was something that i could do to help this family.. Are they holding a fundraiser or anything for the family? I will pray for baby memphis tonight :o)

That is so sad! My cousin's 15 day old son died from that same thing a year ago this month. It's such a heart wrenching thing to even imagine having to go through.....my prayers are with all those who have lost or are on the verge of losing their little ones.

Oh wow, I'm crying my eyes out as I write this, that is exactly what happened to my son. I had him to the doctor in the afternoon and they told me that he had a cold and that night I rushed him to the local ER, from there he was transported to a major university hospital and he was on life support, he fought as hard as he could, but his little body gave out (less then 24 hours after I took him to the doctor's) He turned 5 months old the day that he went to Heaven, this Wednesday (the 21st) he would be 6 years old. I pray that your neighbor's little boy will make it. Why does this have to happen?!!!

hmreyna - June 19

Debi, I am SO sorry about your loss. I just pray and pray for those sick little babies. It's just not fair. I was told that Memphis was taken off life support. Doctors ran tests but they are not sure if he has brain damage yet. If you mom's and dad's would just pray for him tonight that would be wonderful.

That is so sad, and I'm really sorry to hear of these losses. Were these children that this happened to vaccinated? I'm just curious if they got they're Hib shot I believe thats the one that is supposed to vaccinate against meningitis

HannahBaby - June 19

im so sorry debi

Debi - June 19

shelly22, Prevnar is the meningitis vaccine and my son had one dose of it before he died. Needless to say, I have a 4 year old that I declined the shots for as well as my 4 month old. I will never know where my son got it from, but the Prevnar had just come out in July 2000 and the pediatrician, that we went to at the time, told me how wonderful it was and basically talked me into it (Prevnar is also the one that is supposed to help against ear infections, which he had one one week after the shot) I don't feel like I will ever know why or how he got it.

shelly22 - June 20

Debi, I also chose not to vaccinate my son. I would like to talk to you more, but would rather you email me [email protected] I've talked about it before here and some people are a little to opinionated on the subject, so I would rather you email me. Talk to you later

That is so sad!! My godchild died from this same desease!! She was 3.5 years old!! It's heartbreaking!! All I know is that there are different types of menangitis, and for most of them there is no vaccine!! I know my godchild was vaccinated (this was in the Netherlands)and the chance to get the type she got was 1 in 1 million!! Go figure!!

That is so incredibly sad. My friend is a pediatric RN and she worked with and grew close to a patient of hers who contracted the same thing when he was at summer camp at the age of 8 or 9. The camp nurse thought he was faking a cold initially. (It is really upsetting how many medical professionals miss this diagnosis because it seems like a cold initially.) Anyway, the boy my friend worked with ended up having both legs amputated above the knee and one arm amputated below the elbow and the other above the elbow. His story was in Seventeen magazine maybe two years ago or so. He is in college now, I think, and doing quite well in a power wheelchair. Anyway, I am really sorry about your neighbor's baby and will keep them in my thoughts and prayers.
