When Should She Be Able To Sit On Her Own

Hello all! My dd is 5.5 months old and is showing no signs of being able to sit on her own yet. I will sit her up and hold her under her arms and try to let her go a bit, but she just either flops to the side or flat on her face...LOL! I know she's only young but should she be getting more controlled by now? Her head control is good and she has just started to roll over from back to front, so she's obviously getting stronger. When did your LO sit on their own and start to crawl???

My little man is 5 1/2 months oldl, will be 6 months on the 20th and he can sit on his own very well. He actually started about a month ago being able to sit on his own. But let me tell you this is REALLY early. He can sit on his own, but he cannot roll over....he has absolutely no desire to do it at all. So if your LO is rolling over on their own they are developing just fine. I was so concerned about him not rolling over that I asked his ped. and he said that he may never roll over, well until he is older, but since he is sitting on his own that it is a sign of development. I say that your little on is doing wonderful.

I think all babies are different on this. My oldest was sitting up at 5 months and my 2nd was almost 7 months. I'm curious to see when this one will sit up. Just be patiant. She'll do it when she's ready. I do beleve most baby drs give then till 8-9 months as a limit to being able to sit on there own. Thats what they told me with my 2nd. My 2nd didnt crawl till almost 9 months and didnt walk till she was 14 months. But my first was crawling by 6 months and walking at 10 months. It just depends. :)

hello - June 6

they do it when they are ready. i think my daughter was 6 or 7 mths,

My daughter never showed any interest in sitting up. Everytime I'd try to sit her up she'd arch her back and throw herself backwards. Then one day when she was 8 months she sat up by herself and has been doing it with perfect control ever since. Try not to compare your dd with other babies, she'll sit when she's ready : )

Your DD is doing fine. My health visitor told me that they like to see that babies to sit up by 8 months (from birth date or from due date if premature). Sophie is 7 months and can't push herself up to sitting yet but if put in a sitting position can stay there for 10 mins or so. She was 3 weeks premature and I'm sure she'll be able to sit up at 8 months. She is just starting to crawl now at 7 months but can't crawl far at all. She can roll from one side of the room to the other though.

Thanks so much for your responses ladies. Last night, Shelby was sitting in my arms leaning into me when she suddenly started pushing off me to sit up more! So she may start sitting sooner than I thought :D It's amazing how one minute they are struggling to do something, and the next minute they're doing it like a pro!!!!

AmandaManns... Hi. My son will also be 6 months on the 20th and it sounds like they are both alike! Sam doesn't care about rolling over and I worry sometimes, but he sits up well playing with his toys. He has excellent strength, but he's just laid back and hates tummy time still. Aussie Beck, try not to worry. It's easy when we compare the babies, but they really do develop at different rates and it doesn't mean they are behind or slow. I know ...we all want our little ones to be on top of things. lol
