Another Epidural Question

Nervous - February 9

I am 38 weeks and have been having nightmares about the epidural! I definitely want one (I don't handle pain very well) but I am overweight and am nervous that they will have a hard time finding the right spot to put it. Is anyone overweight out there that has had an epidural? I know they feel for your vertibrae and that's how they know where to put it but what if they can't feel yours? Help I am SCARED!

They bend you forward...do not worry about the epidural...the anestheologist knows what they're doing. Believe me you won't feel a thing. I was terrified of the needle before I went into labor adn after feeling those contractions I was begging for one.

PBJ is right. You lean forward and arch your back, so there won't be any problem with them finding it. And even if they hit the wrong spot nd it doesn't take (which happened to me), they simply come back and redo it. The needle is not bad either, though it does feel scary when having it done...just the idea of it. The needle doesn't hurt. The numbing medicing does a bit (but no worse than novacaine you get at the dentist). Then when they put the actual epidural in, you feel a wierd cramping sensation in your spine. It's uncomfortable, but again, nto bad at all. And it's far better than the contractions......Once it is in properly (mine completely failed the first time, then the second time he had to stick me 3 times, lol) the are brilliant! I wasz totally pain free after. I was chatting away with family at 9 1/2 cm! :D
