Internal Examination

I'm off to the hospital today for my 36 week check up. At the doctor's the other day I asked if they'll do an internal exam. He told me they don't like to do int. exams at this stage. So my question is, how have some of you found out whether you're effaced or dilated? Surely the Doc does an internal exam?

Kaz, my Dr. wouldn't do an internal exam for me until I was 38 weeks. I found out I am 2cm and 0% effaced. that was last week. I am now 39 weeks and have another check-up on wednesday...so, I think unless you have a problem...most dr's don't do internals until the 38th week.

Thanks for that Toya. When I found out I was preggy, I had this horrid idea that they do int. exams each visit. What a relief. I'm keen to know though if anythings happening. I have alot of Braxton Hicks and have felt for the last few weeks a heavy sinking sensation. Thanks again

internal exams really don't tell you all that much. i've always diliated early. i walked around at 2-3cm for over a month with my last baby. all the internal exam did was give me false hope. lol. with this baby i'm refusing the internal exams untill i'm a week overdue or in labor.

I got offered a internal exam at 36 weeks, but I am military and they do things different and usually not in a good way. I think the only thing that may make having an internal exam worth it is if you get your membranes striped, but even that can offer false hope. I am having mine striped for the 4th time on Fri. and if it doesnt work I will have to be induced.
