im about 4 and a half months and before i got pregnant i was using. I stopped as soon as i found out that i was pregnant, but there has been a few times where i was irresponsible and smoked speed. my question is what are the possibilities that i have harmed my child and what can they lead to? I am so scared that i have hurt my unborn child and it's going to affect him or her for the rest of it's life.

there are a lot of jen's on this site. anyways i just wanted to tell you that my mother did meth through her whole pregnancy. luckily my sis was born perfectly. they have monitored her at drs visits and so far the only thing that they have found is that my sister has something in her brain that makes it easy for her to get addicted to things. like when she was 2 she colored excessivly. she is 4 now and beautiful. unfortunatly my mom bailed out on her when she was only seven months old and i have been raising her. i hope that you can overcome your addiction and raise a beautiful baby. there is support out there, take advantage of it.

Hi Jen! my name is Sharon Smith, did you know you were pregnant when you were using? In my opinion that is the worst thing you could do to your unborn child.I think that, that is the sickest and dangerous habbit a person could have. It's one thing doing it to yourself but doing it to an innocent unborn child is beyond selfish and very sick. I have never done speed so i don't know feels to be on it nor addicted to it and i'm sure you're having a tough time but think of your baby be strong for your baby, I have 2 BEAUTIFUL daughters and their father is addicted to it but he will not admit to it. He doesn't want to because he feels guilty because it probably makes him feel really bad and guilty.but he is a very good father to his kids.I know your'e probably wondering how I ended up with someone who does speed when i don't do it i met him through a friend, and i was clueless about speed i didn't know that almost everybody in this town does it or has done it. But i have met a few people that have done it, and don't do it anymore. And they tell me all the time if you've never done it don't do it. But i'm smarter than that and not only that I love my babies to much to put myself in that situation. My man does it enough for the both of us. I know that sounds bad but i love him no matter what. He went through a rehab center for his addiction for 3 months and i was pregnant with my first child, and it was hard because it ws towards the ending of my pregnancy and thats when i neede him more because i was getting nervous and scared and he was the only one that could calm me down, and convince me that everything was going to be alright, but he wasn't their he was in rehab so i was really sad.But they let him out when i went in for my c-section so it wasn't so bad at least i had him there with me. But anyway I guess all i'm trying to say is it's not worth it do it for your baby. QUIT NOW QUIT FOREVER.IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD AND YOUR BABY! YOU CAN DO IT BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. GOD BLESS YOU AND GOOD LUCK.

Dear Jenn: I don't know what it's like to be addicted to drugs, so I will try not to be judgemental when I answer your question: To say there is no possibility that your drug use has harmed your unborn child would be a lie. To say that there is a possibility you have cannot be proven at this point. But scores and scores of literature about the use of alcohol, drugs and smoking STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST USING WHEN YOU ARE PREGNANT. Please read as many article as you can on this subject. The other Jenn who responded with her success story is a fortunate one indeed. Please don't use that as an excuse to continue drug use and PLEASE, use this pregnancy as an excuse FOR YOU to kick your drug habit and give your baby every possible good chance to be healthy in the womb so he/she can be healthy outside the womb. I am glad you have scared yourself with this situation. I hope it is enough to get you to think twice before you do it again. I also think it would be beneficial for you to go to a support group or tell your doctor if you are struggling with the desire to do drugs while you are pregnant. There is a reason these kinds of drugs are illegal. But if I could just ask you a question, too. What is the attraction for you to use? And why would you want to continue using while you are pregnant? If you aren't strong enough on your own to quit cold turkey, please get help. Thanks.

So, if it is so bad to do while you are pregnant then why when I just went Tuesday to a fetal specialist did not just one or two but three specialist tolod me my unborn baby is perfectly healthy??? If you can answer this then d__n I guess that makes you a genius! Oh, and Sharon could you be any more cold hearted to this poor girl, she feels bad enough as it is. Jen, it is ok, I will be more than happy to help you along if you are willing, or anyone else for that matter. You can e-mail me at [email protected]

Melissa - July 28

You're baby hasn't been born, you have no idea of what problems she/he will have. That is a fact. Very few things can be determined this early in life. If you believe otherwise, you're in denial and I know your dr didn't say the baby's a-ok for life. Addiction is hard, get help and stay strong for yourself and your baby Jen.

Facts - July 28

For Melissa: At birth, the babies of mothers who used meth during pregnancy are like “dishrags.” They are “sleepy, with decreased muscle tone, depressed, without a good suck..” • Within three weeks, these babies come to resemble “crack babies,” with “tremors, muscle stiffness, irritability, hypersensitivity to touch . . . and sensory integration dysfunction.” • By the age of two, most of these babies recover relatively normal function. But soon thereafter, they start having difficulty with language and behavior. • By the age of eight, a notable number of these children start having angry outbursts that erupt without cause and can last as long as fifteen minutes.

I'll Add: - July 28

Meth-exposed babies commonly act like their drug-affected parents; they are jittery, irritable and not able to handle many stimuli. Meth exposed infants do not like to be touched. The aversion to touch can typically last until a child is 3 to 4, but may continue. Meth exposed infants have been known to sleep 23 hours a day. Many exhibit rapid breathing and have trouble swallowing and sucking. In the first 12 to 24 hours after birth some may seizure, and in the first month they may develop serious heart and respiratory problems. Some symptoms mimic asthma, making the infant more prone to illness such as pneumonia. Depending on the amount of meth exposure during pregnancy, some infants do need treatment for withdrawal. Infants exposed to meth prior to birth have reduced immune systems increasing their risk for SIDS, viral hepat_tis, and HIV/AIDS.

Jen- firstly well done for taking a step in the right direction. You know what you are doing is wrong. Hopefully, if you stop now and don't do any more speed you won't have done any harm. If you do it again you increase the risks which have been described in these responses. Please don't take any notice of Melissa's response, she is in denial and you are stronger than her- you have shown that you care and you already know that you want to stop. Keep that in mind. I wish you lots of luck, strength and I hope that you will remain strong after your baby is born. Your baby is relying on you! Take care of yourself and her/him.

I have had three ultrasounds and none of the specialists I have seen can garantee a perfect baby... And I have never done drugs.. You will not no to what affect your baby is affected by your drug use until they are born, even if the baby seems perfectly healthyb ata birth, some devolpmental problems are not diagosed for many, many years...

I do not know exactly what effect this drug will have on your child. I do know what effect it can have on YOU though. Please do try to find some help. This drug is highly addictive and has ruined several people's lives. Some of those people have been my friends. Basically this drug eats away at your brain - look at the list of ingredients! You will also lose your teeth and perpetually stink of amonia (or stale urine). I work for a doctor that believes that this drug is the most dangerous drug on the market today. It's SO hard to quit though because I have watched people go thru it. You basically have to change your whole life and whole set of friends and that is so hard to do. I won't even mention all the reasons not to do it because of your baby - don't do it because of YOU! Good luck to you in the future!

NOT PERFECT - September 26

THERE IS REALLY NO CLEAR WAY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, ONLY TO TELL YOU MAYBE .YOUR CHILD COULD BE BORN WITH OBVIOUS PHYSICAL DEFORMATIES,NEUROLOGICAL DAMAGE OR OTHER PROBLEMS THAT MAY NOT PRESENT THEMSELVES UNTIL YOUR CHILD IS MUCH OLDER. I COMMEND YOU ON TRYING TO QUIT WHEN YOU FOUND OUT YOU WERE PREGNANT BUT I WON'T SUGAR COAT THE TRUTH OR LIE TO YOU; THE AMOUNT OF METH YOU WERE DOING PRIOR TO FINDING OUT YOU WERE PREGNANT COULD HAVE HAD HORRENDOUS EFFECTS ON YOUR CHILDS' PHYSICAL AND/OR NERVOUS SYSTEM DEVELOPEMENT. ALSO KNOW THAT EACH AND EVERY TIME YOU USE NOW YOU ARE KNOWINGLY PUTTING YOUR CHILD AT RISK. AS A PARENT,AS A FORMER TWEEKER AND AS A MEDICAL ASSISTANT IN THE L&D DEPT OF MY HOSP. I'LL TELL YOU THAT ITS NOT WORTH IT. METH CAN CAUSE PREMATURE LABOR,PLACENTAL ABRUPTION AND IN SOME CASES DEATH. WITHOUT VISIBLE PROBLEMS YOU WOULDN'T FIND OUT UNTIL YOUR BABY IS OLDER DEPENDING ON THE SEVERITY OF THE DEFECT. THERE IS ALWAYS THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE DRUGS YOU DO COULD HAVE MORE OF AN EFFECT ON YOU THAN JUST THAT HIGH,AND RIGHT NOW IT ISN'T REALLY FAIR FOR YOU TO TAKE AWAY YOUR BABYS RIGHT TO CHOOSE. THINK ABOUT THAT THE NEXT TIME YOU GET THAT CRAVING OR ARE "TRYING TO GET BACK TO BEING YOU". I ONLY SAY THESE THINGS TO YOU BECAUSE I KNOW; FROM MY CHILDHOOD, FROM MY JOB BUT MOST FROM MY OWN TIME DEALING WITH IT SO PLEASE READ THIS WITH AN OPEN MIND IT'S THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE. MY METH BABY IS NOW 4 YEARS OLD AND HAS A SPEECH IMPEDIMENT AND ANGER PROBLEMS. SO FAR THAT IS ALL WE CAN TELL. I LIVE EVERY DAY WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT I DID THAT TO HIM. NOT BECAUSE I DIDN'T LOVE HIM BUT BECAUSE I DIDN'T LOVE ME.I TWEEKED UNTIL I FOUND OUT AT 11.5 WEEKS THEN EVEN AFTER I KNEW I STILL DID ITEVEN THOUGH IT WAS ONLY OCCASIONALLY. YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW TO LOOK AT HIM BUT I KNOW. I KNOW I TOOK AWAY HIS CHOICE AND PUT HIS LIFE AT RISK. SO BASICALLY I AM SAYINGFOR SOME THINGS YOU WON'T KNOW FOR SOMETIME IF THERE IS SOMETHING OTHER THAT WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY WRONG. IF YOU CONTINUE TO USE YOU WON'T KNOW WHICH TIME HURT YOUR BABY.YOUR BABY COULD BE FINE RIGHT NOW BY THE GRACE OF GOD:EVERYTIME YOU HIT THAT BONG OR THAT BUBBLE THAT POSSIBILITY DISAPPEARS. YOU ARE I GUESS LESS AT FAULT FOR WHAT YOU DID BEFORE YOU KNEW ALTHOUGH IT'S STILL SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH BUT YOU ARE MORALLY, ETHICALLY AND LEGALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING YOUV'E DONE SINCE YOU FOUND OUT. CONTACT ME PERSONALLY IF YOU WANT ADVICE ABOUT QUITTING OR IF YOU JUST WANT TO TALK TO SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN THERE AND UNDERSTANDS. ([email protected])

Lynn - September 29

Jen, I have a cousin who has been using for almost 2 years and she's only 17. It has caused her to be bi-polar and lose one baby. In the research I have done with her we found out that even one dose of speed during the first 3 month of pregnancy can cause the babys weight to be low, motor skills to be slow, neurological problems... among other things. My advice is to hope for the best and to stay away from drugs all together if you think you are or might be pregnant in the future.
